I'm having trouble with my '92 Paseo idle speed. I need to get it smogged, but they won't test it because it idles too high, even when adjusted as low as possible. I'm going through possible causes in my repair manual, and so far the only thing I've found that could be faulty is the throttle opener VSV. It opens and closes fine, but the resistance across the terminals is out of spec... it's supposed to be between 37-44 ohms, but it's around 52.
Could that mess with my idle speed, or is the problem likely something else? Also, where the hell can I find a replacement? None of the auto parts stores around here seem to have any idea what I'm talking about.
Pull off your intake pipe and check for carbon build up on the butterfly. The carbon/sludge can cause it to stick open slightly and idle high. Also make sure your throttle cable is properly adjusted. I had this problem it was pulling the throttle open ever so slightly and caused it to idle at ~900-1000rpm. How high is your idle?

That's the second thing I checked. The throttle body has been cleaned recently, there's no buildup. Right now it's idling at about 1200rpm, fully warmed up.

Remove the vacuum hoses from the VSV and plug them. Does it still idle high? The brake booster could be bad and not hold vacuum. Also see link below. Not sure how helpful it will be but it has part numbers for your vacuum system. http://www.toyotapartszone.com/1992/...-piping~3.html

I had a similar problem with my 1993 Paseo. At startup the idle shoots up to 2,000rpm and when warm, it dropped down to 1,200rpm. The tested the terminals on the VSV and it was out of spec, so I got one from the U-Pull-It yard. I tested that one and it is within spec, but the idle was still high. I then changed out the Auxiliary Air Valve for used one but that didn't help. In fact, now the idle fluctuates between 2,000rpm and 1,500rpm.
While this is all happening, I am also noticing a small amount of smoke coming out of the tail pipe.
BTW: I just bought this car with 155,000 miles on the odometer.
Have you tested for vacuum leak? idle adjust, etc?
I replaced one vacuum hose to the Auxiliary Air Valve that was a little rotten. I followed the idle speed adjustment procedure as outlined at alldatadiy.com, but those did not help. The idle speed is adjusted as low as it will go, but the RPMs are still as high as 2,000. Also, after adjusting the idle, the car is a little hard to start.
Could this be an iginition timing problem? The previous owner said the coil was going bad so I replaced it along with the spark plugs. He said the car would just die on him sometimes and that he'd have to wait to start it. That kinda seems like how it is acting now - when the idle fluctuates, the car stumbles like it could die at any moment.
The Paseo I have would stumble and die as well under braking. But it doesn't have the high idle problem. It just won't pass the hydrocarbon smog test. I cleaned out the egr and found carbon blocking it's tubes. After that and some seafoam the stumble problem went away.
I am making progress on my problem. I changed the coolant temp sensor and the oxygen sensor. At startup the idle fluctuated between 1,200rpm and 2,000rpm. It did this for a few minutes then settled down to around 1,500rpm. I adjusted the idle as low as it would go, but it still idles at 1,150rpm.
BTW: My check engine light is not on, but I checked anyway and am getting code 22 (engine coolant temperature sensor). That code may be old because I just put a new one in.
