What do you think of the '86 tercel?

I have the opportunity to buy one for $300. Manual trans, mechanic owned until he gave it to his daughter, and he still maintains it to this day. He is licensed and willing to inspect it for free. It has been running and roadworthy the whole time, but recently has been idling funny. They said they'd take a look at it, and if its not too expensive, fix it for me before I buy it. It needs a rad fan, which I would have to buy for it myself. No idea how many miles are on it, either.
