Canada Yet another Newbie from Canada!

Hi all,

I'm Rich from Mississauga, Canada. I drive a 95 Tercel, the second Tercel hand me down from my parents . My Engine just died on me a few days ago so im preparing to do an swap soon since its cheaper than getting another used car (im just a student). Hopefully You can help me out with my questions and stuff since i am kinda a noob at this lol.

I plan to get a 4e-fte to replace my dead 5e-fe. What do you guys think?

Welcome to Toyota Nation, Rich! Let me move your thread over to the Tercel forum so the folks there can help you with the engine swap you're planning.

Replacing my 5E-FE with a 4E-FTE

Lol i was gona start another thread but this makes it easier thanks.

To start:

My Tercel is a 1995 DX, it had a 5E-FE engine in it until a few days ago when the it made a knocking noise, mechanics who looked at it told me the same thing, get a newer engine or a newer car. I looked up engines online and found that the 4E-FTE isn't that much expensive than another stock 5e-fe. And that it would be just a straight up insert as they are similar. is that true? I hope someone who has performed this can help me out lol.

This is the site for the 4E-FTE i found that was quite cheap: http://www.jdmtigerjapanese.com/details.php?id=1669

I got some noob questions lol

1. I have an automatic transmission, would it be possible to use the 4E-FTE?

2. And as you can see it doesn't come with an ECU, can i use my stock unit from the 5E?

3. Ditto with the wiring harness, some say I need to have the wiring modded. i looked up the diagrams for it but im not sure how it works, so i plan to just show it to the mechanic who will install it.

What do you guys think?

1. Yes, but you will get more power from a 4e tranny
2. No
3. No

Look around, there are plenty of engines for sale that come with the wiring harness and sometimes even the ECU. The ECU's are relatively cheap anyway.
