hi there
my bro is happy owner of a tercel 95, we had few problems with the car like had to replace brake lines and do the brakes, mostly
now hes doing 230km a day (wtf) and his odometer (distance) stopped working and his speedometer too
you folks got any idea? not sure if the speedometer is a cable, if yes any clue of what happened? the cable goes in the tranny??
The speedo is run by a cable that threads into the differential housing. It most likely broke. unscrew it from gearbox and pull it out. remove the gauge cluster to make sure it didn't leave any pieces behind.

Before you take too much apart, it might be better to figure out exactly what the problem is. Personally I would unscrew the cable from the transaxle as stated above. Then I would attach a drill to the end of the cable and spin it. Have a person sitting in the driver's seat watching the the speedometer. If it moves that means that the cable and speedometer are good and the problem is in your transaxle. The speedo gear in the diff is made of plastic and sometimes they break, for one reason or another.( old age, hitting a curb, spinning your wheels on ice then hitting pavement, etc, etc.)
If the speedometer doesn't register when you have your drill on the cable then you know that the problem is the cable or the gauge. Both are very straightforward to repair/replace and parts are easy to find at your local wrecker.
