over heating then stalled then over cooling

ok i was driving my 91 tercel down the hwy for about an hour and hit bad traffic it overheated then stall so i got it too the side of the road and waited about 5 mins then i started and punched it and it cooled down then overcooled then got it home checked the rad it was low had to put about a liter of water in it but overflow was full and it was soapy in the rad can anybody tell me what happend i have a trip planned in 2 weeks and need to find out the probly cause i dont want to go 800kms and have it die on me and be stuck lol also it wasnt running like that for awhile cause it has been sitting for a long time under a tree i guess they didnt bother starting it and putting a day sticker on it and take it for a good run

Had the same thing with my 93 Paseo. Basically the rad was low and water pump couldn't pipe the water flow. Filled'er up and run until it boiled all the air out, and put the cap back on. Good as new for 2 weeks now.

thanks for the info i did that but i found out the fan is shot
