My 93 terc makes a corn popping noise after warming up when cruising on the freeway.Go below 60 mph the sound goes away.Very intermittent. Sound seems to come from under the passenger footwell. I've shut off the motor and coasted but it still pops. I dont think its suspension or driveline, almost seems like detonation in the cat. Any thoughts?
If it makes that sound when going over small bumps, you may have bad FSB bushings. When sway bar bushings go bad, they tend to make a "popping or banging" sound because the bar is banging up and down inside the bushing. Control arm bushings and strut mount are other items to check. They can make a similar noise if they go bad. Doubt its anything related to the cat since the noise was still present with the engine off.

Reason: add'l info
+1 on the supension parts. Jack that puppy up and give everything a good lookover. If nothing seems bad go to an empty parking lot and turn the wheel hard left/right and do circles to test if the CVs are making the noise.

This is a rapid fire, although random sound.Any manipulating the steering makes no difference. It comes on suddenly, always when cruising on the Freeway. When you go below about 55 it starts slowing down in rhythm,, then stops. Has a percussive snap to it, instead of a rattling, knockingness.
I do have the EGR temp sensor code come on every so often. (code 71)

If your engine is running properly, no stumbles or hiccups, I'd still say its suspension or maybe body related. Keep in mind the RF FSB bushing and control arm bushings are right beneath the front section of the passenger floor board. The temp sensor code is likely thanks to plenty of carbon buildup covering the sensor.

might sound dumb, but is everything secure underneath? Maybe you have a loose heat shield that starts flapping in the wind. You would think that if it was an engine or exhaust fault, that once the engine was warm and started making the noise at 60mph but went away at 50mph, that you could pull onto a side road, put it in 2nd gear and rev the engine at the same RPM that you have at 60mph, and have the noise come back.
To help in diagnosing your fault you need to figure out if the noise is related only to speed, engine load, gear selection or engine RPM. That way you know where to look; engine, transmission, axles, tires, exhaust, the beer can falling out of the trunk, etc, etc.
Why didn't you just post the findings in this thread????
