first year paseo, sometimes when trying to start it will crank once or twice, then it acts like the bat. doesnt have enough juice to turn it over even when charged. maybe like the compression js too much to overcome because its not getting spark??????????? if i let it sit 20 mins it will start right up. it will idle no prob until i put it into gear, then its like you have to continually give it gas or it dies as it does when braking.. Please help, i'm thinking dist. or ignition coil problem but i need links on how to remove dist and coil assembly thanks for your input
First and foremost, lets get all the needed info on your car. I'll assume "first year" means its a 1992 paseo. I'll also assume its an auto trans. How many miles on it? How old is the battery? You can find the date stamp right on top next to the cell caps. Your problem could be caused by a poor spark condition. If you had either a bad coil or distributor, it wouldn't run at all. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor would cover a full tune up for the ignition system. I'm suspecting a dirty throttle body and clogged IAC port since it idles until you put it in gear. This problem affects an automatic more than a manual trans.

yes, it's a first model year paseo.217k miles, now it wont even start. do i have to put the engine at tdc to remove dist, or can i just mark it and line it back up?the iac is what the tube from the air filter goes into on the throttle body with the 4 hoses coming out of it right? i noticed that the big black air hose is ripped where the clamp is so maybe i'm gunking up my throttle body?

thanks for your replies
The coupling on the distributor shaft is keyed so it will only go in one way. Unless you have a timing light handy, you need to mark the position before removing. Setting it cyl #1 at TDC makes it the re-assembly easy. All you have to do is look which way the rotor is pointing when putting it back together. The IAC is in the throttle body itself. There is a port in the bottom that gets clogged. Get some deep creep and an old toothbrush. Clean those pearly whites. Wipe it out with rags afterwards. Make sure to clean the butterfly and contact areas as well. It can get wedged open slightly by carbon buildup. I don't see that rubber intake plenum on the web anywhere. May have to go dealer for that one. While you have the distributor out, you need to check the ignition coil and pickup coil. If the ignition coil is original at that mileage, its nearing the end of its lifespan.

think I fixed it by replacing the battery. I tested the voltage myself and it had 12.5, but the guy at the store tested amps and it only had 50 instead of 500.it was the original toyota battery

Wow. Thats a long time for a battery. Test your voltage with the engine running as well. Should be around 14 volts. 14.2-14.5V being the best range.
