Gen1 DLC Test - VF1 & E1

I have a question on the Data Link Connector (DLC) VF1 & E1 test.

Supposedly when you connect the VF1 & E1 to a voltage meter, it will tell you what the ECU is doing to compensate for lean or rich conditions.

At idle, if it reads 5 v the ECU is adding more gas to compensate for lean, and 0 v if the ECU is compensating for rich conditions.

With my tests, my 93' Paseo reads a consistant 2.25 volt at idle, varying by 0.01 v. When car is coasting to a stop, the reading jumps toward 0 volt, then back to 2.25 volt.

Can I speculate that under optimal condition, the VF1 & E1 should show 2.50 volt, and my 2.25 volt indicates the car is running rich some how? TIA!

So I found out the VF1 on DLC1 is a serial output stream connector. This won't help me much, unless I build an OBD-I serial monitoring tool.

I found a link: http://toyota.kgbconsulting.ca/wiki/...rial_Interface
with a software in Russian that can decode the communications.

Should I embark on building such a tool with a laptop, or is there a better way around to monitor my Paseo's condition?

Failed. After much work to translate the Russian menu and documentation, building custom serial cables out of network console cables and Cat 5 cabling. Putting on two 1uf capacitors in parallel, etc...

Turns out the 93' Paseo didn't have a VF2 connector, which means I don't get the serial communications...

It seems your first error was using a Cat5 cable. Data to a Ethernet or TokenRing connection with Cat5 would not provide serial connectivity. Try using a 9-pin serial adaptor. It is the same as the old (I mean really old) serial modem connections. These were external modems, not the RJ-11 connection you have in your house for a phone line.

Thanks but, no this Paseo doesn't have the newer port, just the old style diagnostic block.

I was just splicing the cable. No RJ-45 or BNC stuff. Cat 5e cable is good enough from 300 baud modem headset coupler to gigabit ethernet.
