hi
I was checking the ignition timing on our stock sera and using a timing light, the mark on the pulley is hovering right on the centre 12 oclock. There's a mark 10 and 0 somewhere between the 1 o'clock 2 o'clock. Now how come the pulley mark is so far away from the cover mark?
I tried adjusting the distributor to the max setting and the idle went really slow meaning its now off timing retarded and its just a tad close to 10!
by looking at the distributor from the front where should #1 be? Mines facing the firewall. Maybe its 180 degree out?
bear in mind I just got this sera and just replaced sparks plugs, oil and flush coolant.
before the service it was running a bit rough (idle surging), so I've cleaned the throttle body, removed it, cleaned the IACV, and the one attached to the throttle body (fast idle air control valve?)
Checked any cracks on the hoses and couldnt find any. Double check everything and they are all connected right, did not missed any hoses.
Im not realy sure how that damn timing light works or timing mark,
What we did is using the book as a guide and online sites,
After engne was reasembled we put on the belt on the RIGHT side and then streched it, this involves removing all covers from engine. Then put the Camshaft to the timing mark, it has a little hole and then aligned crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) to the 10 degree mark, ONLY THEN the BELT actualy goes on, and it goes on the bottom first and then top curving around the RIGHT idler, and then make sure its snug, then strech it from the left using the idler, we had the left idler removed completly untill belt was snug in its place, because it gets in the way.
After made sure to rotate engine a few times using crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer)
Timing seems to work great but the actual (harmonic balancer) mark is a little bit off at around 8
If u followed same thing timing should be good. I dont have a book with me but the distrubutor can be adjusted if you need.
Id check timing if i was u, and then mess with the distributor. Make sure to check ur sparkplugs because impoper timing or distributor will FOUL them, and they will not fire properly even if everything is perfect, so that might confuse u

Please advice
Seems like your having trouble seeing the marks. Use liquid paper(white out) and mark the "V" notch in the crank pulley. Also mark 10 degrees BTDC on the timing cover. If your idle dropped, your retarding the timing. You must jumper E1 and Te1 in the underhood DLC. The engine must be at normal operating temp. Otherwise your timing will be all over the place. This is probably the reason why you can't get the marks to line up. Painting the marks just makes it easier on the eyes.

and of course I can see the "V" mark on the pulley thats why I was stating that the pulley mark is hovering around the 12 O'clock area where it should be at 1 o'clock area.
And the dizzy spark plugs are in order
There's only one way you can install the dizzy right so it cant be 1 tooth out cos there isnt any gear its a cog like a flat shaped end.
The rubber part of the balancer tends to harden after this many years allowing the outter ring to slip. I'd bet yours has slipped. Confirm by removing plug #1 and put piston at top dead center then see where timing mark is on balancer.
