Question Coolant/Water Leak (1989 tercel)

I need some guidance.

I have a 1989 toyota tercel 1.5L with a carbureted engine. I am trying to fix a coolant/water leak from the water pump housing (I think that's what you call it).

Here's whats going on:

1. The water pump housing or housing shell has 3 bolts (I think) and it connects and holds to the actual water pump. It's a seperate piece of housing shell that is mounted behind on the engine block.

2. There is a seperate piece of "metal pipe" that connects to the water pump housing shell. It's about 5 inches...can't remmeber. There are 2 rubber hoses that connects to the metal pipe and they are not too far from each other (maybe by a few inches).

3. Coolant/water is leaking in between the edges of the "metal pipe" and the water pump housing shell. (Not the water pump)

The thing is, with some leverage I can actually wiggle that pipe, and coolant/water will leak out. It feels like as if it's not threaded in or something. Even if I don't wiggle it, it still leaks. From what I can tell so far, I think the only thing that holds that metal pipe together with the water pump housing shell is silicone gasket maker, but I could be wrong. Also, I did see some traces of black rubbery sealant around that area.

My question is, is the metal pipe threaded into the water pump housing shell? Or is it just sealed together with silicone gasket maker?

Here's what I'm currently doing. I just got done draining the coolant. Most of the coolant is out, but there are still some coolant left inside the water pump including the housing shell. And yes it's still leaking but very slowly. The next thing I'm going to do is, I'm going to put High Temp Silicone Gasket Maker in between the edges of the metal pipe and the water pump housing shell. I just hope it will stop the leak.

Probably a bad o-ring between the pump housing and the metal pipe. Toyota uses o-rings on quite a number of parts so thats likely to be your problem. I was researching online but couldn't find a diagram for the pipe. Good idea to ask the dealer to be sure.

Looked in the Haynes manual - it says there's an O ring between the water inlet pipe and the pump.

I just got done taking out the part and yea turns out it was an o-ring. It looked okay, but I still replaced it. I also put silicone all around the water inlet pipe and the pump housing since the only thing that's holding the two parts together is the o-ring and silicone. Weird design by Toyota.

Toyota has used that design for decades with no problems. In fact a much thinner O ring seals your oil pump too.
