Potential Fuel Pump Issue 1990 Tercel
Hi, I have a 1990 Tercel with the 1bbl carburetor. It has the mechanical fuel pump located under the hood next to the cylinder head. After letting the car sit all winter, it will not start. When I squirt a little starting fluid in the carb, the car will start long enough to burn off the fluid then it dies out. I have read in other posts for different 'yota's issues similar to this but they mostly talked about the fuel injected engines. I changed the fuel filter and today when I tried to start it, I could see fuel in the new filter but when I disconnected the line between the filter and the fuel pump, it appeared to be dry. Do I need a new fuel pump or is it possible that the pump needs to be "primed?" Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Without any fuel treatment over the winter, the main and needle valve are probably gummed up. Look at the sight glass. Is there fuel in the bowl? It would be worthwhile to pull the carb and clean the float, main and needle valve as well as the throat. You can confirm the pump is working by having someone crank the engine with the fuel line disconnected. Have a clean gatorade bottle or other catch container handy.
