1994 Toyota Tercel smokes, lacks power, and fouls spark plugs.
i have a 1994 Tercel broke down on me while driving.
Spark plugs were pretty bad (oil deposits, fouled) but I replaced them and drove home 150 km's with a rough idle, lacking power, and some smoke. Seemed to run ok between 60-70 KmPH but had no power uphill, or at starts and stops.
I have a feeling that I need to replace all the valve seals, although i haven't done a compression test yet. I will buy the gauge tomorrow and do that.
Any ideas or similar problems? The car only has 130 000 Km's, and has been serviced regularly.
well if its fuel injecton like mine, i think it could be same as mine Head Valve seals are leaking, i still havent replaced mine, i just add oil, it doesnt foul spark plugs though seems ok.
I think u might have a head gasket problem then, if its leaking shit into the combustion chamber, check if u have compression with ur tool and then see
if u have compression, i might be ur injector is using too much fuel maybe or no compression from the intake, might be cracked or something, check that.
Im not realy a pro but thats what i would go and check.

Definitely not the air filter. The plugs I put in yesterday are already pretty black, and the engine still runs really rough. I think the compression is the first thing I check tomorrow. Ill keep ya posted and thanks for the reply!
when u replace head gasked and remove head, replace ur head bolts, as they get streched out with age, i bought mine at autozone for liek 40$ theres 10 bolts, u might wanna try somewhere else, oh yeah bolts are exacly 8MM, if u try to use T40 or T50 attachments to screw them or whatever they try and sell u at autozone, u will stip the bolts like i did thats not fun. The whole damn car is METRIC , damn autozone doesnt realize that
goodluck

Might be a couple of things that you want to check before you jump right into changing the head gasket. Timing and timing belt, fuel delivery, cap and rotor, plug wires, vacuum lines, idle up switch, the other vsv's, O2 sensor, temp sensor. A lot of things that could be faulty, and if you don't check them before you do a head gasket, you might change it for nothing, or you could start running in circles omce you have the head gasket job completed.
#1 rule in mechanics? Check the cheap and easy stuff first.
#2 rule in mechanics? Don't randomly replace parts hoping to solve a problem, unless you have too much money, lol
How is the fuel pressure? I had to replace my fuel pump.
If the car idles at all, disconnect each fuel injector connector, one at a time, to see if any are not working (if disconnected and there is no change, that cylinder isn't firing). Check for spark, too.
