The Paseo was my first car when I turned 16, now on the edge of 29. I built it from stock to retired show car. I've had a few kids, so I haven't driven the car much over the last few years, but now I'm getting out in the garage more and I'm slowly working on getting it road worthy again. I did new struts a few months ago and I need to paint the trunk and bumper. Anyways, what I was getting at...For as long as I can remember I've had black junk coming out the exhaust and little black dots will build up on the trunk and bumper. I've always just figured it was carbon buildup, but I have never been able to get rid of it. I used to know these cars inside and out but I'm a little rusty. As far as the exhaust goes, I have a pacesetter header, followed by a catco hi flow cat, out to a dragonfire muffler. Anyone else had any experiences with this? Other than that I just need to replace vc gasket. Is there a gasket/ring somewhere around the distributor cap? Could be leaking from vc down around the distributor..not sure though, I haven't got into it yet.

Burning oil or rich fuel mixture will cause soot buildup back there. Were the valve stem seals replaced?

No they haven't been replaced. I've always felt like it was running a little rich too, just never did anything to check.
