Hi, im new to this forum. i was trying to do a self diagnostic on my 1991 tercel but i didnt disconnect the battery first. not it wont start. what did i do? if someone could tell me what i did, please no smart ass comments, and how i can fix it that would be much appreciated.
Check your fuses first. Some are under the hood, some to the left of the brake pedal in the corner inside the car. If an important circuit (computer, fuel pump/injectors) shorted out then a fuse should have blown.
check ur BATTERY terminals, ur battery itself, its probly old and the terminals Oxidized
Battery might be simply depleted, u have to charge it and check if it gets hot, if it get hot, then ur battery is likely dead and will ignite if u charge it long, i would replace it right away

see the thing about that is that i had just driven it around town. from school to the DMV to the smog place, they didnt smog it because the check engine light was on. so i took it home so i could check myself, then when i put the paper clip in the TE1 and the E1 ports of the diagnostic section to check the flashing of the check engine light. but when i tried to start it... lights came on but nothing else...
If you have an anti-theft device built in to your car, it's possible that you triggered it by jumpering the diagnostic connector. Locking the drivers door shut and then unlocking it with the key should deactivate the anti-theft device if that's the problem.
check the main fuses, under hood, they are large 50 AMP and such, they mightve died, because u shorted out the system i think.
Your car does NOT have a reset diagnostic thing, mine doesnt, what u can do to reset check engine light is disconnect battery, wait a few seconds and plug it back in.

but i can get it to start when the car is moving, like rocking it backward or forward, then engaging the clutch.
That "is" JUMP starting. UR BATTERY is dead i think, use a volt meter to check it, or bring it to autozone or w/e so they can check it, its probably shorted out and u need a new one, fuse was supposed to short out and protect it, maybe ur fuse is too high in AMPS? who knows.
(deathlok rulez!)

ha oh ok. i thought that if the battery wasnt working then nothing would come on at all. but thats great ill check that out. do you know witch fuse would have shorted. if one had? or what one should have shorted?
No, if the battery is LOW or dead, the car will start, if you JUMP start it. The engine will generate its own electricity from the Alternator (generator). If the fuse went out, your car would NOT start at all. (I think)
So if it starts, check the battery, its connections, and itself.
If battery is ok and u think its fuse (Which i doubt, i think u killed battery with a short) Look under HOOD, next to battery.
Its could be one of the large FUSES there, they are large, with a clear peice of plastic on top, u can look inside em to check if there ok, but in my experience, they can burn out on the bottom, good way to check is to pull them out. DONT pull out the RELAYS, they are the circular aluminum ones, or the Square dark one, with no glass on top, those are all relays, they dont realy affect car starting, just things such as fan and junk, car should start without em.
I think ur battery is just LOW or dead, either way test it. Remove it + charge it or replace it for a new one. Also be sure to CLEAN with a wirebrush or something like sandpaper, CLEAN THE BATTERY connections, they tend to become green or white, thats not good, they should be COPPER, gold in color.
Im almost positive im right, im still not a pro though
