Would I be better off buying a $27 toob of Toyota goop for my oil pan or a aftermarket gasket because Toyota can only give me the goop and if I dont do it right i'll be leaking all over again the aftermarket gaskets look pretty good anyway just wanted to know witch one you would go with.
Goop does not LEAK, the gasket leaks! I instaled both goop and gasket, onlything saving me from loosing all oil is the GOOP, the gasket came off. And is sticking OUT in a few places. I know why because i tightened it too much.
The default tension to tighten the oilpan bolts is 8 Inches per square foot, NOT FEET - inches! So just like u would tighten a regular small screw, just a bit, finger tight.
Yeah, just like JIM said, the GOOP is same shit, its same type of rubber gasket liquid, make sure to use OIL resistant one, i think its RED. Mines is. doublecheck at autozone before u buy, u only need like 1 tube.
Goodluck hope that helps!

Yeah thats the stuff! Make sure to let it dry a bit, so its LESS gooey. and then attach the PAN, then wait till its dry-ER and THEN tighten the pan completly. FINGER TIGHT!

I used both on mine. That black silicone stuff works wonders. I put that stuff under the gasket then put the gasket on and called it a day. I did that forever ago and still have had no leaks.

so your saying that you over tightened the gasket witch is why it failed because i've been thinking a gasket would be better and I wouldent mind trying one so I think i'll try it not over tightened and if it dosent work it's not like it cost me very much and i'll get the goop

If that's the case, it sounds like a crankshaft oil seal OR a camshaft oil seal going bad. But the only way you can tell is if you take out the top and bottom timing cover and start the car and observe the crankshaft and camshaft oil seal area. Make sure all your drive belts including your timing belt is connected before starting the car.

sound's like some hard work and lot's of time I can take the timing cover off in a couple minute's and if it is the crank or cam seal I might just leave it for another year next time I have the pan off i'm going to have to throw a set of bearing's in there the bearing's in it are very worn but not knocking yet but I could move it a little by hand to make it klatter when I had the pan off
I had a leak coming from my timing cover not long ago and it turned out to be the valve cover gasket leaking into the top of the timing cover and down through the inside of it. The leak ended when I reseated the gasket. If you replace yours, be sure and clean off the old goop from the corners near the hump on the right and left sides and put new gasket maker there before reinstalling or you'll have a leak there.
my valve cover gasket is only abouth 10000 km old and the oil pan's proply got between 300-500km on it now when I did the oil pan and turned the car on I watched it drip for proply 10 min's drip drip drip drip........ but i've been checking the oil every day and it hasent moved yet but I watched it dripping it would normally have gone down after two days so right now I dont know if I fixed the leak maby there was some oil on the engine and when I started it it just ran off? I dono

Hopefully that means you got the leak fixed or at least minimized.
I still suggest checking the valve cover gasket since you saw drips from the timing cover. My valve cover gasket was about the same age as yours is when it started leaking. The guy who had installed it originally didn't put gasket maker in the little crevices near the humps on the valve cover. If there isn't gasket maker or similar goop there the valve cove it will eventually leak, but not until the rubber gasket shrinks and retreats from the crevice just enough to let oil through.
ok so I got my lazy ass out there this morning after I got off work oil is not coming from valve cover under timing cover is dry and its not coming from the gasket I put on oil pan is it some kind of main engine seal thats leaking cuz if it is I know it going to be big$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ i'll go out right now take a pic and post it I know that will help
