Has anyone done the rings without pulling the motor? My motor has 103,000 miles but i'm sure the guides and oil rings are gone,.... the car wasn't taken care of. It Runs great with a 32/36 Weber but uses and leaks oil. the car blows blue on start up, and if it sits for a day or so it doesn't want to start. Once it starts it goes real well. 89 octane helps with ping but the plugs come out pretty white (Hot). Timing is on or very close.

Hmm, im not realy sure about rings, i need to do it too

What i know is you need to take out the motor i think. To remove the Pisons u need to pop the holes and then release the piston, otherwise u cant change the rings, they are in the middle of the piston. After u take it out and change em u need to RE plug the holes on the side of the engine with those steel plugs. I have no idea how to do it, but i think thats about it. Changing the rings, means u open up engine, open up engine means u have to take off the timing belt and shafts, that means u need to take engine apart, or its too hard to do.

So i dont think its possible to change rings while engine is inside the car, or it will be too hard. Its much eazier to take it out, its quite eazy to work with, its not very heavy. I would also get a NEW full gasket set, and change the MAIN gasket and the oil seals and such if u see any leaks and offcourse change the VALVE STEM seals. Those damn things leak!

I got a kit on ebay with full gasket set, theres also pistons set with a pump check it out. U can also just buy rings, but u still will need NEW GASKETS, engine HEAD BOLTS, and those steel plug things. So its quite complicated. I HIGHLY recommend u do everything at once, you dont wanna be like me, I took out engine to just change the Main Gasket and clean out the Carbon, and now i see i have OIL LEAK, and VALVES leak, and rings leak! Not fun

I'd do a compression or leak down test before just assuming your rings are bad. As bkftl said, the valve stem seals go on these cars. That might be all you need to do.

I'm thinking this may be the case,..... with that, if it has consistant good compression I should. I haven't rebuilt a head before, I have always taken them in,... can the valve guides/seals be done without pulling the head?

Yes, I believe they can. This is a DIY written by someone who did it on the newer 16V engine, but the same general procedure should work for you.

I did the rings with the engine in the car on my 94. Head went to the shop, and I did the rest. Up on jackstands, oilpan and intake off, pistons come out from the bottom, iirc.

There is no way to remove a piston from the bottom. I have a 5e block right beside me and a piston. It will not fit between the mains. Also you can't replace a valve guide with head on, seals yes.

Thats why I said iirc. One way or the other, I redid the rings on my 3E with the engine in the car. I used the handle of a rubber mallet to push them out.
