87 tercel problems!! please help!!!!

my 87 tercel 1.5 1brl carb is running really hot, will not idle at any temperature, jumpy throttle, bucks and shakes, will not accelerate when full throttle actually slows down. and it all together feels like is suffocating.. i dont know if its the air or the fuel delivery,,, but i know for sure its a vacuum problem but im not very a carburetor-oriented person.... please help im going insane, i feel like driving it into a wall, but it wouldnt get upto enough speed to do any damage.....

The carburetor is the main source of problems on 87-90 Tercels. My Tercel was doing a lot of what you describe (minus the overheating) just before I replaced the carb with a Weber. It happened slowly and got worse and worse over time. If your problem is new and sudden, it's probably something simpler...

If you think it's a vacuum leak, I would check and see if there are any hoses loose. I would also check to see if your EGR valve is stuck open. The vacuum switching valves (VSV) can also be sources of leaks if they are stuck open or are cracked. The VSVs are usually cylinder shaped and have three vacuum hoses going into them, sometimes with an electrical connector also - most of them are under and to the left of the air cleaner. I would also check the vacuum hoses going to your distributor advance since they affect engine timing which would explain the overheating.

yeah, its not exactly "overheating" but its running hotter than normal, and i know for sure its the carb, its been doing this off and on since i got it, i disconnected one of the hoses from the egr and its been working alright, like i said this has happened many times before, and usually i just attack it with carb cleaner and it seems to do the trick, but this is getting rediculous.. i was actually planning on swapping in a weber and replacing all the vacuum lines, know where i can get one cheap? and thanks for the help by the way

You can get a Weber from lots of places online - Carbs Unlimited seems to be most popular on this forum, though they cost the same ~$350 almost everywhere. I got mine from auto parts ware house dot com. Get the one with the linkage on the driver side if you can find it, though either version will work. I'd avoid buying a used carb since it can complicate troubleshooting and tuning if you don't know everything is working perfectly inside the carb.

Here's a guide I wrote on how to do the swap: 87-90 Tercel Weber 32/36 DGEV Swap Guide

You may also want to disconnect the EGR vacuum modulator and plug the lines if you aren't using the EGR.

If carb cleaner is helping, try running a can of sea foam through the intake system or just add it to a tank of gas.

yeah thats what i figured, this is my first car though, i really want to keep it and get it running really nice, but i dont really have the money to do soo, because im going to school right now, and ive only got a part time job, soo ive been trying to find less expensive ways to get it nice, atleast for now, but in the long run ill do it right,, i was actually thinking about putting a two barrel in it from the same year, or an 86, but my car is soo hard to find around my area.... and i actually read the swap guide, it seemed very helpful.. but what is Sea Foam? could i get it at a parts store?

Sea foam is a strong solvent cleaner for engines that can be found at most parts stores. You can put it in your gas tank or pour it into the carb intake or manifold directly. If you pour it into the carb or manifold directly, you'll have to rev the engine as you do it or it will stall. You will probably have to change your oil soon afterward too - it will blacken from all the gunk that busts loose. I would make sure whatever carb you get will fit before buying - I'm not sure if earlier model Tercels have the same mounting arrangement for the carb or not.
