'83 Tercel 3AC Carburetor Question

My Tercel recently suffered a major setback, and a connecting rod bearing shattered. Being broke and unable to afford the mechanic bill, but also a glutton for punishment, I decided to overcome my complete lack of experience and do the repair myself. Long story short, everything went fairly smoothly up until the very end. As I'm reconnecting things on the engine, I notice that a piece of plastic that's in-line on one of the carburetor lines has busted. I'll try to describe it:

About 3/4 to 1" long, cylindrical. About 1/2" in diameter. Intake and outtake on each cylinder end. The hose I got to run a new line is about 1/8" ID, 5/16" OD. The thing was orange, if that helps at all.

There are no real identifying marks on it, except for the brand name 'Aisin', which is on many of the other parts in the car.

From what I can tell there are 2 of them on the carb, both in-line with a rubber hose going to steel pipes. The other one is still intact. I took the thing to the local auto parts store, they thought it was some sort of vacuum valve, but they were really just guessing.

After looking around online I found this, which I looks exactly like it, just steel instead of plastic:

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...%7CGRP2026____

Mr. Gasket Fuel Filter - 5/16 inch hose

I was hoping that someone here might know, based on my admittedly poor description, whether or not this is the part that was broken, or if I need to be looking for something else.

Thank you in advance for your help. I'm pretty inexperienced at this sort of thing, so I may have missed some crucial detail. If I need to clarify anything or provide additional detail, please ask and I'll do my best. Thanks again.

Does your thing look like this vacuum check valve (aka one-way valve)?

It looks similar, but not quite. The barrel is all one diameter, solid color. The intake/outtakes are equal diameter as well. I actually did purchase one of those, because that was my best guess as to what it was.

The car currently starts, but dies after about 10 seconds. Since this is the only thing I can think of that has changed, I'm hoping that I'm wrong about it being a vacuum valve and I just need to find the right part.

I'm headed down to the town where the car is located tonight, so I'm going to take my camera and post a picture later this evening. It was stupid of me not to grab the part when I left last time.

Thanks again for trying to help guys. I'll put that pic up ASAP.

since you can see the aisin, is ther by any chance a 5 - 10 digit number anywhere on it? it may start with a 90925- xxxxx or just have like a 04003 or something like that OR 90917-10049. I am looking for any kind of number. What I think it is is some type of vaccum switching valve, or what they called a jet. they were plastic and had small vaccum lines on both sides, but they tended to have numbers on them to help identify them.

Also, if you PM me your VIN and Email, I could send you a vaccum schematic and that may help me help you.

OK, so I managed to get some pictures. Unfortunately now I cannot find the piece that broke. I'm hoping that these pictures with the location marked, plus my description, will help out.

I can get the car to turn on, but right now it will work for about 30 or 60 seconds, then shut off on it's own.

Any help / advice is appreciated. Thanks.

The upper right circle is where the original part was located (the picture shows it with the replacement vacuum valve in place)

This is a view from behind the engine. The circled item is again the location of the broken item (shown with replacement vacuum valve).

The arrow is pointing to a vacuum line which leads to the vacuum pump attached to the bottom of the distributor.

Okay, so the vaccum line goes to what I suspect to be the vaccum advance on the distributor. When I get back to work on Monday, I'll be able to figure this out for you. In the meantime, can you look at the orange and black one, and on the orange part, there should be a 5 digit number on it, yoiu may have to wipe it clean, but if there is, I sure could use that it would make things a bit easier, if not, I may still be able to figure it out.

I pulled the orange and black part, and got the number from it. The black part says Aisin and VAC. The orange part says 2128. Again, this is not the exact same part that broke, but it is similar in size/shape. The other part was about the same size, with the same size inlet/outlets on each end, and all orange in color.

You are correct about the vacuum line going to the vacuum advance on the distributor.

EDIT - I just found a vacuum diagram, and the part I broke is labeled as a 'Jet'. The other part, from the picture and numbers I gave you, is labeled as a 'check valve'.

That may be what I needed to get you the part or Part number.

While you do not have (apparently) a T4WD Wagon, do join our Club; all of our cars have 3AC engines and there are a few sedan and 2WD Wagon members as well.. There is a lot of experience, and we have a FSM available for free download.
I also worked up some color-coded vac line systems (and the underhood one as well) for Federal vehicles.

What you have is correctly described as a check valve. After checking the OE part EPCs on our site, I could find no listing for this. I think this is going to be a JY part.

After looking at your photos, I am again reminded why I installed a Weber...

Our Club is www.tercel4wd.com.

I have a 1983 tercel 4wd station wagon which I bought new in October of 1982. My brother and I refer to it as the voodoo car.I retired the origional engine at 294,700 miles. The clutch still worked and the transmission has never been touched. The engine still ran, but the compression was pretty much gone. Now with 320,000 plus miles, there is a problem. It's the carbuerator. The gasket for the pump plunger developed a crack. I bought a rebuild kit and decided to replace other parts to include the needle valve seat and the needle valve. When the carbuerator was put back together, I cranked the engine, it ran beautifully for about a minute and then cut off. I waited about five minutes and recranked the engine and the same thing happened. If the revs are kept up to about 2,000 rpm, it does well, but the moment the I let off the accelerator, the engine dies. I have a shop manual so determined that the problem is the new needle valve and float adjustment. After many tries, I can't get it right. I love this car. When I die, my young nephew has agreed to place me in the car, catch it on fire and send me over the edge and into the Grand Canyon. The local mechanics don't like carbuerators, especially old ones. I need advice.
