Changing Belts on 91-93 Tercel.

Well never thought I'd be posting on a Toyota forum (Subaru enthusiast here) but here I am. My gf has a 91 or 93 Tercel, can't remember the year but her belts are very worn. This is all she told me, I'm assuming it's the A/C belt and such not the Timing belt as the auto shop gave her a quot of $100 to replace the belts. Now I changed the belts on my Impreza myself and it was a breeze, because of the H4 engine design the belts are located at the front of the car and there is plent of room to adjust them. I don't know where the belts are on the Tercel as I haven't see the engine of one but I'm assuming they are to the side. I wast to know if they are hard to replace and save the money for her or let her go ahead and have a mechanic do it.

Thanks,
Matt L

do it for her. the belts are on the pass side. loosen the tensioning nut from the alternator(you may need to tap on it until it moves). if she has power steering you can also loosen the other belt by loosening thetensioning nut on the power steering pump.

Thanks. Yeah I'd rather save her the $80 in labor and do it for her.

the power steering also has an adjusting bolt that you will have to turn to raise or lower the power stering pump.

The 3E-E has got to be one of the easist engines to work on, that includes drive and timing belts. Once you get into it a little bit, you'll see how easy it is.

Any idea hwere I can find the part numbers for the belts? Best to just goto the local Autozone or Pep boys or should I goto the Toyota dealer?

belts replace question

Folks,

i tried to replace the power steering and AC belt with no success on a 94 tercel.
Here is what i tried to do in sequence:
1. loosen top nut on the powersteering (easy)
2. loosen the bottom nut, underneath the power steering (couldnt reach)
3. loosen adjuster/tension (gave up in fustrated tears)

Any thoughts? Do I not need to loosen tension on the top and bottom bolts and just focus on the adjuster?

Thanks in Advance!

Yeah the bottom nut has to be loosened along with the top before it will move. I use one of those ratchets where the head can move forward and backward, and I use a deep socket 14mm. That seems to fit the best in that small area. Maybe try a 14mm wrench and see if that reaches also. That's the only frustrating part of the job, the bottom nut. The tensioner and bottom nut is best reached from under the car in my opinion, so jack her up and remove the tire and plastic panel. Tensioner uses like a 12 or 13mm socket i think.
