Speedometer Problems

I Have a 1991 Tercel, 3E-E, 5-speed manual. Just recently, the speedometer will not read until I get to about 20-25 MPH then is starts to work. The odometer is working even when the speedometer isnt. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeff

the cable is probably slipping and when it hits the speed it probably catches or something

That is what I thought at first, but don't the speedometer and odometer work off the same cable? My odometer always works, even when the speedometer is not.

it's not the cable

since the odometer always works but the speedo doesn't means it's not the cable. It could be something as simple as a loose needle or a as serious as a buggered speedo. Hit the salvage yard and pick up a "new" one for like $10

If the speedo is messed up and the odometer is fine, follow Qballcious' advice.

Thank you, yes the odometer works fine but the speedometer is flipping out, the needle moves but only around 10-40 flipping. I will get a new speedometer and a speedo sensor (I have heard they brake down) and will check the wire. Do you know where the wire is connected in the engine room? Thank you

pull your dash apart and rip that thing out. on the back you can unsnap the speedo cable. lube up inside real well and put it all back together. problem fixed.

Thank you, I will try that. Do you lube it with WD40 or with heavier stuff?

wd 40 would work but it would cause it to get dirty fast. i used some silicone lubricant in a can.
