Question water pump location?

I have a 1994 tercel. if the water pump is not working correctly what are some signs/symptoms? Also where is the location of the water pump? thanks

Leaking water, running hot. Water pump is on belt side of engine under timing belt covers, powered by timing belt.

on my 93 which should be the water pump is just behind the timing cover, not under it. powered by the same belt as the alternator. could be wrong though
