damn it, stripped a couple of head bolts while trying to change a gasket. Any ideas with how to extract these bolts? I dont want to get in there with a drill and core the bolts out, lest it slips and makes a new hole in the head. i was thinking of getting some vise grips in there, but there just isnt enough space! Any suggestions will help.
craftsman has diferent types of bolt extractors. im sure theyll have one that will work and they arent very expensive. if you have a craftsman dealer in your area. heres what im talking about... http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00952166000

Thanks for the tips fellas, but the tercel uses XZN / triple square bolts that are round on the outside, so the common bolt extractors wont work. I knew i should have ordered the Toyota SST!
how about welding a nut on the top of the broken bolt? the opening in the center will be enough to get the nozzle in there!
BTW: i've never ever used an SST to remove head bolts. i've rebuilt the 3E many, many times!
Get some left hand threaded bolts and force thread them into the triple square holes. As you tighten them the bolts will release. If this won't work then hammer some bolts into the holes, tack weld them and then remove. Did you have the proper tool to start?
nope .. i used a ghetto 5/16 hex key instead of the toyo SST. It opened 8 of the 10 bolts without any problems. I *did* buy the XZN bit, but the wrong size ... (apparently toyota makes one which is 8.99mm in size) and i bought 8mm and 10mm. I did find something interesting though .. its called a 'multi spline bolt extractor' looks just like an easy out but designed for socket bolts. Will call my local snap-on truck to get the down and dirty on this tool. Once i know how it works .. you lot will know how it works!
