Brake pedal bottoming out, leaky master cylinder?

A freshly acquired paseo with a braking problem needs your advice toyopeople! The brake pedal goes in all the way and braking is almost non existant. I know this could be a leaky master cylinder, so i am thinking of swapping in one from a 1991 tercel. Do they both use the same kind of cylinders? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Im guessing the paseo is a 91 as well. Either way the part number is different.

yep, they even look different. so much for the tercel and paseo belonging to the same family. Toyota just cheaped out and used the same dashboard... Looks like its time for a rebuild kit.

They are the same family, but the Paseo was ahead of that generation of Tercel by leaps and bounds when it comes to engine, brakes and such. All the basic parts concerning brakes/engines/suspension can be swapped from Paseo to Terc to Starlet to Sera and even a few Corollas.

ALWAYS try to find the problem, before asuming what the problem is. Asumption can cost you a lot of money over years. If you replace the master cylinder and find out that you have a rusted out line.....then you just threw some money down the shitter. Make sure that the brake fluid is full, have someone step on the brakes and see if you can find where the leak is coming from. Good luck.

if your brake pedal goes to the floor, then there is a good chance you have air in your system. Bleed the car well first before you replace anything. First bleed the MC , then work your way to the wheels. If you dont have a buddy to help you, gravity bleed the wheels. Open up the bleeders and let your toyo cry her brake fluid out. Just make sure you watch the resevoir. While you are down there check your hoses, see any leaking? replace if you see any leaking or if you see any buldgeing. and i am guessing you have checked your pads.

You either have air in the system somewhere or leaking cup seals in the master cylinders. No amount of bleeding will correct leaking cup seals but a replacement m/c will.
