USA 1981 Tercel-recommendations?

Hey everyone: I am looking for info on this early Tercel. Probably going to buy it this week, but I'd like to know what to look for problem-wise. Cosmetically, it seems fine. It's a 5 speed with 1500 engine. Also, which engines will fit in the car? I'd like to put in something bigger and peppier down the line, but know some engines weren't meant for a 5 speed transmissions, and others are too physically big to put in such a small car!

same project

I am about to start the same project. I did some research & found the "a" series motors all mount the same. I still need to confirm this though. There is a local toy junk yard & performance store somewhere close to me here in PA. I have to get my friend to bring me there. Hopefully he can point me in the right direction.

"a" series motors worth using are 4age,4agze

Keep in touch with your project www.mike@duffmanaudio.com

Do you have a local junk yard that has an early 80's tercel? (80-82?)

If your going to swap in a 4age you'll need an 8 bolt 7.5" flywheel and a stout clutch. Look for my post that has these very things for sale here.
