Just purchased a 91 Tercel. Nice little runner: 5sp/1500 55,000(assuming no roll back). I am already thinking of how I could have some fun with it. It definitely needs struts and shocks. Anyone know another quick suspension mod that could go with these two. I am thinking about 15's in the wheel department has anyone had experience with bumping wheel size?
A quick and easy upgrade would be a Paseo front sway bar if your car didn't come with one. Pick up some Eibach springs and KYB GR2's from ebay and you have a good start on the suspension. Then start looking for front upper strut bar, front lower, rear sway bar and adjustable panhard bar. Also check out my boy Estabon23 on www.TercelOnline.com for some anti-lift plates. I hope that helps some.
Upsizing the wheels isn't a big deal as long as you stay below 17". 15's or 16's are your best bet. Drop me a line if you need anything.
I blew my first turbo motor a few years back because I just threw it on the stock 5efe. I'm taking my time with this 5efhe, so no boost yet. But when I had it, it was a blast. I'm taking my time in building this one to be reliable and fun. Shooting for 250-300 hp. Click my MSN Spaces link to follow along with my build.
Wow awesome! Very Inspiring. I am a previous Ford Mustang, F150 guy. First Toyota ever. I am on the band wagon! Don't have to worry about half of what I had to with a V-8 and the $ of mods is drastically reduced. Plus these cars are tough! I'm looking to create more of a Rally car. How can I get a littel bit more low end power out of the stock engine. Any simple mods? My car is very slow until it builds up rev's. Is this normal?
you can probably fab up a cai, asp underdrive pulley www.aspracing.com, there are also a few engine swaps that can be done. your better off to kill the original motor to vaidate a swap.
Look into a 4agze swap for low end power idle to redline. The 5efe doesn't make power until 6800, then it hits redline. Adding a turbo will give you power at around 3200 up to redline. Ask questions, do your research, and then pick your poison. You could always go with bolt-ons, but you won't really have enough power for rally or road racing unless you run high compression.
Thanks for the tips. I do have a 5sp and it does need a clutch I new it upfront when I bought it, so that's going to happen very soon. I'm not slipping too bad, it feels like it could also be the slave/master but I didn't see any leaking when I had it on the lift though. I'm hearing estimates of $600-$700 for the clutch. I looked at the kits and they're not too bad. I am assuming the engine has to be yanked to get at it. If have 56,000 orig miles, do you all think while they're doing the clutch they should do the timing chain? I heard this was a mandatory thing. As far as engine swaps...........can't say it hasn't crossed my mind Anybody familiar with ASAP Motors http://www.asapmotors.com/used-toyot...nsmissions.htm They have some good prices from what I am comparing with! I know nothing about the quality. Prior to any swaps though I am going to get to know this engine a little better and see if I can do a few basic mods to get a little more low end, get it breathing better. I think I am starting from the bottom up with this thing. With the roads like they here in ChiTown you need a 4x4. I just threw on some KYB Gr-2 's up front for survival. The orig's were GONE.
Yeah, do the timing belt If the motor is getting yanked or swapped. Also change the water pump along with all seals and gaskets on the head assembly. Here is a link for a better price on a USDM 5efe http://www.nippon-motors.com/toyota.htm
