I adjusted my valves a couple days ago cause the engine was doing a lot of shaking, I was hearing some ticking noises and looked like it was missing. I adjusted the valves to .008, but I can't remember if the engine was hot or not. When I finished and started the engine, the ticking sounded the same and I had a lil bit more power. Now the next day it felt like it lost power and the day after, the ticking got louder. I adjusted the distributor cap for better timing and that seemed to work for a lil while. The next couple days though I lost more and more power and the engine temperature started to rise a lot, it never got to the red but it was like a little bit under 3/4. Now yesterday, the car sounds like a damn truck when it starts, with a louder ticking noise, I drove for about a mile, got to a hill and it wouldn't climb it at all. I left the car parked there and came back a couple hours later, now the car won't start at all. Anybody can tell me what the heck happened??? Headgasket maybe?
Its the 3E-E Tercel Engine, but it looks like I got it fixed, I readjusted the timing, changed the timing belt and it looked like a vacuum hose was disconnected. I'm not sure if it came off when I was driving or after I lowered the engine from the car to work on the timing. Came off from the MAP sensor I think. It looks like its ok now, but still kinda missing. I actually set the #1 piston a little bit below TDC cause I turned the crankshaft until the piston just slightly started to go down. Maybe I should of just left it at its highest point huh. I figure the distributor is where you do the fine tuning to delay the spark. Any comments??
aligning the timing marks on the cam and crank gears, anybody here got a diagram of this? If not, just cruise on down to an autozone store, they have alldata there and grab a printout of it. The 3e will never really fall out of a bucket and cannot be pushed very hard, but there are a couple tricks to get a little better response out of it, get the map sensor vacuum line as short as possible, mount it close to the manifold take off, and the tps should be adjustable, turn it against the throttle shaft rotation as far as you dare or to where it will no longer idle, it will die instead, if this happens just turn it back a little, dump a can of seafoam in a full gas tank, these three ideas wont cost 10 bucks and just might help
I know for the camshaft, the 3E on the pulley should be at the 12 o'clock position, what about the lil lobe coming from the crankshaft, 12 o'clock also??
I hate to tell you bud but I think your going to end up with a new speed hole in your block. My buddy went through two motors and what your discribing is exactly what his sounded like just before they went.

Speed hole, what you mean??? Well I got the engine working again but now I'm losing power again, the timing belt is skipping teeth and I have no idea why. What can cause a timing belt to skip teeth?? The tensioner pulleys don't have any play in them and when i spin them they go smooth. I replaced the crankshaft timing sprocket and the half moon key cause they was bad. The teeth on the oil pump and camshaft look good. Put in a new belt which looked the same as the old belt, marked everything and after the second start of the engine, the marks didn't line up anymore. Now this is a mystery to me! Anyone can help?

The marks won't line up after you run the engine, except like every 60th rotation or something like that. Think about it for a second
Or better yet, rotate the engine a couple times and see why.
Well I'm not that much of mechanic to fully understand it, but the thing with the 60th rotation, is that something that's suppose to happen or is that my speed hole problem? And just in case anyone need clarification, the marks I'm talking about is the ones I made on the camshaft sproket and the timing belt tooth.

No it's normal. It's just because of the number of teeth verses the number on the sprockets. One rotation of the engine does NOT equal one rotation of the belt. I'm not sure that it's 60 either, it's some high number like that...
Ok thanks Dr Tweak, you the man!!! But I'm just concerned cause its like everytime I start the car, it feels like the engine misses more and more until it just won't start anymore. I replaced those parts today so I won't know if anything goes wrong until another couple days, so hopefully all will go well. Just today, after I put everything back together, the engine sounded so nice on the first start with no kind of vibration, on the second it started to miss a lil I think. But I understand what you saying though.
