So yah, Ive been thinking of geting a new car in the price range of around 8k. But then I was looking around the forums and relized that maybe i should swap my old tercel...cuz its kinda hard for me to come up with 8k and im only 17...right now i got around 1k and im thinking of instead of buying a new car maybe i should just swap my engine...so heres the deal, I got a '93 tercel auto(i know i know used to be my sisters...) but only got 100,XXX miles onit (just reached 100k like 3 days ago, WOOT! lol) so I was thinking of swaping a 4A-GE 16v. 1.6l. But ill need a 5 speed tranny as well. And with the engine and tranny and ECU and everything how much do u guys think will cost me w/ and w/o labor. I dunno but im really in love with my cel, just a fun car to drive around in, and if it would produce more power i think it would be kick ass anywayz in the next few months i should have around 2k or 3k dollers cuz im geting a lifeguarding job over the summer (10 dollers per hour w00t) and im just thinking if all this would be worthit or should i just save for my new car...? because in about 1 year ill get my appraiser licence and ill work with my sister and her husband for almost $300 an hour so a money wont be a problem later on, but for about 2 yrs ill need a car that will get me around and wont be to boring...so if you guys have any input on this or flames or w/e go ahead let me know cuz i really want to know if my tercel still has da powa!
(if some of this dont make sence dont blame me just got of a 16 hr shift at work....)
thnx to all
The Tercel is a fun platform to play with. The 4AGE option is possible, but kind of difficult. It's easier to swap in the 4EFTE, which is a very fun 1.3 turbo engine. I just completed one of these swaps, and let me tell you, the car really moves now!
Anyway, you can usually get these engines for around $1600, they bolt right in, and usually come with a 5-speed tranny. The hardest part is the wiring. You have three options there, do it yourself (possible with time, experience, and the wiring diagrams), send it to me to do it, ($300), or have someone else do it.
For the 5-speed conversion, you need to get the clutch pedal assembly, brake pedal, shifter assembly, shifter cables, clutch master cylinder, and clutch lines. Then you need to do some drilling and whatnot, but the parts pretty much bolt in. Of course get the ones from your year Tercel 5-speed.
If you want you can also bring the entire car over to me for the swap, I'm in Vermont. The whole thing would run you about $2400 or so.
can u let me know the specs on that engine? cuz 2k dont sound that bad, i can come up with that money prolly in the middle of summer, and by that time ill have like 120k miles on this engine so it wont be a complete waste throwing it out ill finish it off good lol, thnx in advance.
damn thats good shit Im going to play soccer with some of my buddies at the moment but i really want to find out more about this engine, if you can give me ur aim or msn or something u got that would be awsome, u seem like a guy that knows his tercels ur great help thnx again
Do the 4efte. 4age is a great swap... if you have a spare 6 grand. You have to fab up one mount and there is a small issue with the axles. But if a 4age is done, you will have a TRUE DOHC and a whole mess of performance goodies to add. But bang for the buck... 4efte all the way!
After thought. Do a google search for "4age Paseo" You should turn up a result for a couple of guys in Paletine, IL who have done the swap and race that Paseo. I think the guys name is Chris and his buddy's name is Bob. I know his email was something like RDM20fan or something. You know, just in case you don't want to drive to Vermont or Florida for your swap.
heh thnx for all the help guys really apreciate it. all i need to do is save my money now! was just driving my tercel and i like daydreamed for 5 mins about how it would feel to have a tercel with 130hp+ and 110torque+. wow that car would pull so sweet and it would be a total sleeper lol. all i have to do is steal my neighbors front bumber (he hasnt driven his '93 for like 2 yrs now...) cuz my sister, being this was her first car, kinda hit a non moving car, but besides that lol its just a lil scratch that you cant even see from like 10 feet away but it bugs the shit out of me lol anywayz. thnx again and im gonna see what im gonna do with this, i really wanna make it into a sweet ride before i get my new car in a few years.
EDIT: One more thing, i heard you gotta import the 4EFTE from like japan or something...wouldnt that kinda be a problem cuz it would cost a lot? sry for asking so many questions but im really geting excited lol thnx
