question on shifter

tomorow in my machine trades class im going to modify my shifter on mt 93' 4speed to make it a short shifter. my first question is do you guys think i should straighten out the shifter since it does have a bend in it? also does the shift knob just unscrew? because i was just looking today and it doesnt come off easily like i thought it would so how exaclty am i supposed to get it off

The shift knob just unscrews counter-clockwise.

Are you just going to hacksaw off the shaft and rethread, or move the ball on the shaft?

just shortening the stick will not reduce your throw enought to actually tell. it will just make it a little harder to shift. I'd recommend moving the fulcrum (ball) 12mm higher up on the stick and you'll have a 33% reduction in throw. then chop it off and reweld the threaded piece on. I'd also recommend keeping the tilt cause you will lose the use of your cupholder otherwise. Mine just barely touches the cupholders when in 3rd gear.
