Newbie needs help with stallingTercel

My '89 Tercel started running hot so I checked and saw the radiator fan wasn't running. I tried to see if the fan relay in the fuse-relay box was bad - I used a jumper across the slots where the relay goes. Oops, spark; click somewhere. Now, the engine starts but continues to run ONLY if I jiggle/pump the accelerator. So it won't run with a load and it will stall if I floor it or hold the accelerator still. I killed it but I don't know what to do to ressurect it. I can't read codes because this model doesn't have a check engine light. I replaced the PCV valve but no change. What's next?

Have you checked all the under hood fuses?
Try unplugging the alternator and see if it will run. (pull plug out alternator, not pull wire off)
Buying proper test equipment and using it is highly suggested if doing your own repairs. A test light or at least a fused jumper would have saved you the headaches you are now facing.

All the fuses are OK. Haven't tried the alternater suggestion. What will it mean if:
runs with alt. not plugged in vs. doesn't run with alt not plugged in? If the alt. is dead because I killed it and we unplug it, there shouldn't be a change from the current symptoms. If the alt. is OK and I unplug it, ???.
