blue oily smelling smoke

Hello all,

This is my first post to this site. I just purchased a Tercel with 164,000KM on it. I got a good deal on it ( I think), it has had a lot of work done in the past 4 years 60,000 km(water pump, timing belt, coil, rear oil seal, shocks, I believe timing belt as well) It burns a little oil and if its been idling for a few minutes it will give some blue smoke when you move. I know it is probably the valve stem seals....but my question is how long should it take a qualified mechanic to repair this problem and how much would the seals cost approx.?

Save yourself some time and money by just getting a reman head. If the valve seals are worn then you can bet at least a few valve guides are also and expect a couple of valves to need replacing. By the time you do these things and a valve job you'll have as much if not more money invested and half the warranty.
If you are planning to make a rig to swap the seals without removing the head this can be done and will buy you extra time. However it's a really tight area to work in and easy to goof.
I got really lucky, found a wrecked car with a 'fresh' engine(9000miles) that I bought for $400. Took me and a buddy 5 hours to seperate both cars, swap my 5 speed onto the new engine, then reassemble my car.

Good luck and let us know what happens.
