In the last 2 months, I have had 2 used power steering pumps put in. One replaced already for another one and now the 2nd one is starting to make that squeeling noise when I turn real sharp. Should i have a brand new power steering pump put in or could it be an underlying problem and not the pumps being put in. I can see one going out but 2 in a row?
Makes me question if 1) place their getting used pumps are reliable and 2) if there might be something else wrong making the pumps go out so quickly.
Any one with any ideas please let me know! Funds are running low and mechanic has agreed to go in half with me on the pump and no charge for labor. Oh! Is there any sort of guarantee when your mechanic gets a used part with your permission to put in your car?
The squealing is prolly just a loose belt. If not you might try a new pump, or convert to manual steering. A car under 2000lbs doesn't need power steering.
yeah, i think the power steering belt is about 8 months old. still has the writing on it. No wear or tear. Do you think that theres a possibility of getting two bad used p.s. pumps one after another? or could the rack and pinion steering has something to do with it

Yeah but a non power steering rack costs more then the powered one. At least here in Greensboro it does, so I kept the power on mine.

Has your mechanic bothered to check the pressures or test the flow control valve or pressure relief valve or is he just "shot-gunning" parts on your car?
To be down right honest with ya, I don't know. how would I go about finding this out? Askin him if he is doing these tests how would I be sure he is being honest with me and if I suggest that he is just shot gunnin' it probably isn't going to get an honest answer from him. So, how would I go about finding out if these tests have been performed on the car?
Is there some kind of computer print out he can give me that shows if he did these tests?

I don't even see a manual rack available through a parts store. Prolly have to be in a wreck to damage one. Salvage yards have plenty of good units though.
I think all Tercels sold with A/C come with power steering also since the powersteering pump is what tightens up the A/C belt. So, you would need to find one that didn't have A/C, and I think that will be very hard in the US.
NAPA, Advance Autoparts, Pep Boys and I think Autozone quoted me prices on non-powered steering racks for my '89 Tercel. They might not be available for other years. I dunno.
What year is your car Phyllis ?

My car is a 91 Totyota Tercel dx with a 1.5 liter engine. Now the cars power steering pump, after the car gets warmed up, doesn't make the noise unless i turn the wheels in either direction real tight. I have a/c in the car but doesn't work. Compressor shot. Since I know very little about cars, fixing them, how they work, etc. I don't kno what the best choise is. let my mechanic go in half with me on a brand new pump with no labor charge or what. Right now it's about my only option since strapped for money. If the rack and pinion were bad would it make the car eat up p.s.pumps? I really appreciate all of you guys advice. We have been using this mechanic for about 4 yrs. now,and the reason he put on a used pump was because he knew we did not have alot of money to put up to have the p.s.pump fixed.

The pressure relief valve is located in the flow control valve inside the rack. Is your problem with the pump or with the rack? Even though you've done business with the same mechanic for the last 4 years or so......is he familar with the how's and why's of how a power steering works and what happens when it doesnt work properly?
