3400 High idle setting when cold

When I start my T100 in the morning it hits 1500 rpm for about 30 seconds before stepping down to like 1200 rpm. Once it's been running for a minute or so it comes down to a more reasonable 800 rpm or so. Is it normal for it (3.4 V6) to idle that high when cold? Seems crazy for a fuel injected engine to have to do that (not to mention what it must do to the bearings).

Does everyone's 3.4 do this or am I the lucky one?

USA fast idle

You are the lucky one, mine starts out at 2000 RPM and everyone looks at me like I am the one making it do it. I would like to get it down at least to 1200 RPM on start up.

Hehe - Thanks for the chuckle. The noise is definitely annoying but I can only imagine what my crank and rod bearings look like at 1700 rpm with no oil hitting them for 10-15 seconds. I was reading a post about changing the valve cover gaskets and it mentioned a "cold start injector" so I'm wondering what part that plays in this. I think I'm heading out to get a manual today and see what it says. If that doesn't give me what I'm looking for I'll call the Toyota dealer Monday and see if anyone there knows what the proper high idle should be.

Thanks for the reply man.

Probably normal

I haven't checked the manual yet but I noticed my in-laws Avalon cold starts at around 1800 rpm also (I think it's an 02) so it's probably a toyota thing.

Mine does the same thing. '03 Tacoma did it too, as does my '05 Tacoma. With the anti-drainback in the oil filter the pump starts spraying ASAP, AFAIK.
