timing belt

Hey peeps I'm going to change my timing belt on my 93T100 v6 210.000k i think it's time.. My question is .. any tips and things to look for that my manual doesn't tell me or avoid any unecessary steps that my manual does tell me to do?? thanks

I had the dealer change my timing last year. They recommended changing the water pump at the same time since it is in the area and easy to get to.

Sorry, I can't offer any hints or tips for changing the timing belt but I can offer some encouragement....you're gonna save yourself a bundle of cash doing the job yourself! I just had the timing belt, water pump, all drive belts, tensioners, both camshaft seals, and thermostat replaced and it cost me almost $900. And it wasn't even done at the dealership I'm telling you, that was painful but I plan on keeping this truck till I'm too old to drive any longer so I'll get my money's worth...Good luck with the job!

I did the timing elt on my Tundra 3.4. I used a Tacoma shop manual. Its all the same. To get the crank bolt out, you'll need a huge breaker bar and something to keep the motor from turning. I used a chain-visegrip and a 5' cheater pipe. If it doesn't come loose, just pull harder. You'll also need a vise to re-compress the tensioner. Get some new coolant. I did mine at 100k, and needed nothing else. the belt was $70 from Murry's- the dealer wanted over $400.

I used no such tool. the tensioner comes off and is compressed with a vise or press. That thing just looks shaky. It takes a LOT of force to compress the tensioner, and I wouldn't want put that on the pulleys. Besides, it was easy to remove and only a little fiddling to re-install. Don't forget to pull out the pin after you get the belt on.
