Replacing Front Brake Pads/Rotors

Hey all

I have a 98 T100, badly needing new brakes.

I've done all my own brake jobs over the years until 5 years ago when I bought this truck - I took off the wheel, saw that the disk did not just slide off, and bailed on it. I live in the mountains and really have to be careful not to toast the rotors on these weak brakes, but the last brake job was 3 years ago and so it's time.

With my work situation dicey I really don't want to spend extra money right now...

Any special tools needed? Any special parts that need replacing?

Any torque specs to be aware of? Any tricks?

Are you looking to replace/resurface the rotors? If so, you'll need the 54mm hub nut removal tool. Not sure if AutoZone has one of those fer rent or not. To do the pads, it's a pretty simple without taking the caliper off compared to the 2WD where you have to remove the caliper in order to git to the pads.

Yeah, replacing the rotors. I had Centric Rotors this last time and they lasted way longer than stock, but living in the mountains they are all warped and need to be tossed.

PS - they indicate in the article that an inner seal would also be required - correct?

I just used a large socket to remove the bolt . Do not be intimidated by this once you start working on it it's super easy.

Hey All:

I heard back this weekend that it's smart to replace the inner seals when you do this job.

My former mechanic who did the job last time said that you can use a hammer and a chisel to loosen the locknuts, or you can order a special tool for the job.

Were you guys able to use just a regular 52mm socket or did you need something special?

He also emphasized that the inner locknut would set the bearing preload and should be set about hand tight.

Any other advice? I'll be ordering a set of inner seals and then will give it a shot.

Best thing to git is the Toyota factory service manual (FSM). It will prove invaluable over time as you work on yer truck.

Is it a standard socket, or something special?

Where's a best place to buy an FSM?
