1996 T-100 with automatic transmission, around 260,000 miles.

The shifter light is stuck on neutral. Even though the shifter handle can go through all the gears just fine, the light will not move.

This just started today.

Any suggestions?

Can you start yer truck in any gear?

Could be yer Park/Neutral switch. As far as I know...the indicators on the cluster are electronically controlled by the transmission.

Is the harness in the back of the cluster plugged in all the way? Did you install anything new lately?

Negative, only starts in Park.

I got a new stereo for christmas, and had that put in. But that was over 2 months ago.

Is there anyway this could have worked loose on its own? I drive on a lot of dirt logging roads going to the deer lease.

I would double check the installer's work and make sure he didn't drill any screws into critical areas...I've seen that before where they've installed stuff with screws and the point of the screw is resting on a harness and rubs it way into the wire (over time and bumps) causing a short.

The harness on the back of the cluster should be snapped in place with locking tabs. If no one's messed with it...it should be fine.

There is one thing I think I should mention - for the past month or two when I shift into park, sometimes the park light does not come on and the truck does not go into park. The shifter has to go into the slot "just right" and the light will come on and the truck will go into park.

As for the radio, I was there watching the guy when he installed it. There was no drilling. He just popped part of the dash off, screwed the radio in and put the dash back into place.

You can check the linkage and adjust it. Mine does it as well as a few others on the forums. You could check the Park/Neutral switch on the transmission to see if it's tight...

Looking over the body electrical part of my service manual...I noticed that the Park/Neutral switch is the one that definitely controls the indicator. I would look at that and see if it's not busted up or something. It should be located on the outside of the transmission...
