I was just looking in the factory manual to see what the "bimetal valve" was for. It said that the charcoal canister traps the gas fumes from the fuel tank when the truck is not running and stores them until the engine is hot. This is when the bimetal valve, located on the intake manifold opens up and allows these fumes into the airstream to be burnt by the engine. It's for emissions.
