3.4 L sounds like a diesel

My '97 T100 motor blew last month, so i hunted down a used 3.4L with less than 50K (re-manufactured). I got to see the motor running and it was great. Sounded prefect even in the high RPMs.

So I had the mechanic swap out the motor for me. Even put a bunch of new parts on the motor. I got the truck back yesterday and there's a lot of chatter coming from the motor, so much that it sounds almost like a little diesel motor. This noise was definitely not present before the swap. It sounds like it is coming from the heads.

Any ideas? Possible timing problem?

Also, the motor is a '96, but still a 3.4l. I don't know if I should expect problems putting a 1996 motor in a 1997 truck.

Check valve clearances.
