Charcoal filter/canister..

Have a 98 t100. when filling the gas tank the gas nozzle clicks as if the tank is full. So now it takes a while to fill, or in this case, half fill the tank. Took the truck to the dealer and was told that the charcoal filter would need to be changed.
Does this sound right? Any DIY writeups on this? Is there a way to maybe bypass the canister or is it a necessary part of the system?

TIA...

where would the charcoal canister be located on a 98? Is it in the rear near the tank or under the hood near the drivers side wheel well?

If it is a 4 clinder 2.7 then it will be drivers side square canister
If it is a v6 3.0 it will be passenger side round canister
If it is a v6 3.4 it will be driver side round or square canister.
Canisters probably depend on the make and modle though i got the enfo from hanes manual
If i were you i would check all the hoses that go in and out of can and see if it is cleen
there is a hose on top of canister that goes to fuel tank.

Appreciate the response. The actual owner isnt very car savvy..lol..and doesnt want to spend the $300 the dealer is charging to replace the canister. Seems if its located in the engine compartment it should be an easy fix..
My understanding from other posts Ive read is that disconnecting the line that runs to the fuel tank would allow him to be able to fill his tank without the gas nozzle shutting off..temporary fix..but is this true?
