Some noob questions...

Hello,

So in my browsing of this forum I have seen a ton of posts about engine codes. I understand where they come from and how they help you. What I do not understabd is where/how you read them. Where is the inboard computer (I have a 3.4L 5vzfe)? And are the codes somewhere on that or do I need a tool to read them? If anyone could claify that or me it would be much appreciated

Also, I have stumbled across throttle body spacers in my search for performance mods. A lot of these mods seem to be questionable and I have seen varying reciews on them and have heard that their effectiveness varies. Has anyone had any experiances with these on a 3.4L T100? Ones that actually improved performance?

Thanks!!

The computer in the T100 is behind the glove box. The diagnostic port is on the right side of the engine bay near the fuse box (I think this is different on model years). If you are getting a check engine light then bring the truck to an autozone or auto parts store and they will read the codes for free. Or you can by your on code reader.

I my research to gain power and spend money I researched spacers. This is what i found. Throttle body spacers are a waste of money and add no power. They worked back in the day when carburetors where used on engines. On those engines they helped mix the air and fuel before it entered the intake manifold and on to the cylinders. On fuel injected engines like the 3400, spacers don't do anything because the fuel is directly injected into the cylinder. Out of everything I have read on them for the 3.4 engine is the spacers add an annoying intake whistling noise. So if you want to spend $70-100 for no added power and an annoying whistling noise then go for it.

Adding HP most to least on the 3400-
+++++++ Supercharger
+++ Headers
++ Free flow exhaust
+ Intake/Deckplate mod

Yer 96 T-100 should have the ODBII port located by yer right knee when yer sitting in the driver's seat. It's just under the dash. You'll need an ODBII code reader to pull the codes and then look them up. I have a ScanGauge II and it works double duty as a code reader as well as a multi-gauge fer things like MPG, MPH, RPM, etc...
