Question Rear speaker upgrade: 5.25" easy drop in?

I poked around some of the old threads but never found a conclusive answer:

Although it's not an SR5, my truck has factory speakers in the rear. From what I've read, I'll assume they're 5". If I order some 5.25" upgrades will they fit easily by just drilling new holes and expanding the hole diameter or will I have to custom fab something, in which case I should just get something bigger anyway?

I'd love to just drop in 6x9"s (like dalyman) but I've had too many break-ins to go that route again. I want something that will sit behind the factory grill and look stock.

If you've replaced your factory rear speakers please chime in! Thanks

I m pretty sure only the SR5s came with rear speakers. Take a flash light and look through the rear speaker grillz and see if there are speakers there. If not you should see just some clear plastic sheeting. And you will have to buy some of the stock speaker enclosures to install or fab up your own. I have some 6 1/2s installed back there myself. I just fabbed up some enclosures out of MDF . You could do the same thing with 6x9s easy and they will fit behind the stock grill . I will warn you removing and reinstalling the inteior panel is a pain in the butt though. Good luck

I'm here to set the record straight that the SR5 is not the only trim package that can have the factory rear speakers. My DX came with a factory CD player in the bottom half of the double DIN dash opening and it has four speakers. It does not have the factory amp or separate tweeters. I'm almost positive that this stuff is factory because no one in their right mind would ever spend aftermarket money on the trash that's behind those panels!

Thanks for your experience Vegeta- I'll probably have to build something up but it's nice to know I'll be able to hide a good 6x9 back there!

If I remember correctly you have 11 inches or so side to side between the metal mounts for the stock enclosures and like 24 inches top to bottom and a good amount of depth. So you should have no problem squeezing in some 6x9s. If you want the best possable sound I suggest running sonera new larger gauge speaker wires to all your speakers front and back. Those puny stock wire dont cut it. Good luck man and if you need any help on how to remover the rear panels just ask .

I found this picture of the rear speaker enclosures and thought I'd post it here so we'd all know what's behind those big scary interior panels!

Looks like I'll be fabbing my own mounts for replacement speakers as these don't look like they'll be of much help.

I also can verify the SR5 is not the only model that came with rear speakers, as i have speakers in the rear, and they are exactly like those shown above as factory speakers, and are identical to the front speakers as well

OMG thats hillarious ! Props to Toyota for actually building an enclosure though ! They could have easily just bolted the drivers in and called it a day

I can't wait to rip those things out. I plan on coating the inside of the panel with mat, and fiberglassing in a nice box. I have some spare 8'' subs laying around that I will see how they fit. Any idea how much room there is for mounting depth in there??

I haven't gotten around to figuring out the depth yet but there must be a bit of room- I found this on another site:

I'd like to stealth mount some 8's behind the panels and vibration dampen the shit out of the whole zone! what do you think?

It looks like they have one of those pads on there and the way they have it on there it may not allow the seat belt to retract all the way.
