Help installing aftermarket stereo in 98 T-100

I purchased a new kenwood stereo (KDC-MP342U) for my 98 T-100, and am having some problems installing it. I stripped the factory wiring harness connector off, and connected the wires from the aftermarket wiring harness to the appropriate wires leading to the truck. I have power to the stereo, and everything works as it should, however, no sound comes out of the speakers (stock speakers). I have double checked all the connections, and they are matched up correctly. There are two wires coming from the truck that are not connected to anything. The car stereo antenna trigger wire (black & red), and the car radio illumination wire (Green). Could these wires be the reason for no sound, or is there some other explanation for the problem. Any advice would be helpful.

After doing some research I have found that this problem can occur if the factory amp in the car is not bypassed. My question is does the 1998 toyota t-100 have a built in amp located somewhere in the vehicle?

Did the stock radio have two or one wire bundle to it? If it's one bundle, then you have the external amp. Trace the single bundle to the external amp. You will find 2 bundles of wires connected to that. That will be the standard Toyota wiring setup.

Thanks for the info. Yes the stock stereo did have one bundle going to it. I traced that bundle to the amp and found the two bundles of wiring you were talking about. Now I have a decision to make, try to get the car amp to work, or use the amp that is built in to the aftermarket stereo. Which one would give me better performance?

Use the aftermarket amp...it will be easier to wire up since it's the normal Toyota speaker/power wires. The input going into the external amp takes a pre-amp input.

This is the reason I buy all my stereo equipment from Crutchfields...they supply all of the necessary connectors so that cutting/splicing the factory wires is not necessary. Not to mention a very detailed installation guide, free brackets, no shipping this month and free technical support.

I just installed the same Kenwood in my 96 T-100 SR5 along with 2 Kenwood 6 inch door speakers and they even supplied new brackets for the doors. The installation was simple and never had a single problem. I also had the factory amp and was supplied a connector I needed to bypass. Took less than 1 hour to install everything and it looks factory.

Good Luck with your installtion but take a look at Crutchfields next time and save yourself some time.

Did you have to use a mounting kit or the factory brackets were all that you needed?

Thanks.

They supplied the compartment under the radio and the brackets for it but they were the same as the factory stuff so didn't even need that. The only additional brackets I needed where for upgrading the front door speakers to 6 inch...and the 3 wiring harnesses , 2 for the radio including 1 to bypass the factory amp and the harness for the speakers.

SORRY TO BRING IT BACK UP TO LIFE!!! About the the Amp, Are you guys talking about the amp that is hook up to the stock stereo or does it have it own that is hidden. I'm having the same issued. I try using the two hardness wire that is hook up under the amp but NO sound still.

I too purchased my replacement radio (pioneer DEH6400BT) from crutchfield...best radio purchase experience I have had to-date. They helped me to choose the right radio and provided instruction for the replacement. I plan to replace my speakers soon, probably stock size and I will go back to them for purchase.

I believe the amp is located under the ash tray in the plastic piece by the carpet.
