Replacing the Coil on Plug spark plug boots...

So after changing out my valve cover gaskets and taking one of the Coil on Plug (COP) spark plug boots off...I started gitting a misfire. P030X... :(

Of the 3 COPs, two looked original and one was newer. This T-100 has 368,000 miles on her. :D

So you replaced the 3 wires to the even numbered bank...but what do you do fer the odd numbered bank? Clean them up? Replace them? Leave them alone? :brick:

Did some shopping around and found that Advance Auto Parts had the replacement spark plug boots fer about $20 each. :D

Picked up all three boots just in case they were all bad. Had some dielectric grease on hand to make things a little easier to assemble and keep the moisture out. ;)

I worked on one COP at a time. No need to disconnect the spark plug wire. Tools needed are a 10mm socket, socket wrench/driver, needle nosed pliers, something to apply the dielectric grease (toothpicks work great), gloves, and rags.

So what's in one of those boots? Here's what's inside (3 pieces total). I used some needle nosed pliers to gently grasp and pull the core out. ;)

If yer boots are okay, you can clean up the spring end by rubbing them against something that isn't too abrasive. I used the ridges on my scissors to brighten the contact point up. I figure it should provide a better contact fer energy transfer, right? :D

I used some dielectric grease on the rubber boots to aid in the assembly of the COP. Not too much...just a thin film. I used a straight hook tool to apply the grease. This will also aid in keeping moisture out. :D

Reinsert the core and push it in until the top of the core is about 3/8" sitting above the bottom of the COP cup. The core has landings to "click" in place. Just don't push the core flush with the bottom of the COP cup...you'll have to pull it back out until it clicks. If you don't, the core won't lock into the COP. ;)

If yer still not sure how far it's supposed to go...take digital piccies of the original setting so you know how far it's supposed to go... ;)

Repeat fer the other two COPs. I put some anti-seize on the COP retainer bolts and hand tightened the bolts with my nut driver. :D

All bolted back down...

Don't fergit to tighten the clamps to the air intake hose...and if you disconnected the MAF...reconnect it. I always disconnect my MAF connector because I don't want to take the chance of ripping the connector out of the wiring harness when removing the air intake hose. ;)

Update... ;)

Advance Auto Parts doesn't carry the Autolite ones any more. They do have the Carquest Premium ones (Part # 35-7034) fer about $7 (lifetime warranty). ;)

Well, the old boots were cracked up pretty bad as you can tell in the piccies and would've allowed the spark to jump to the spark plug tube. I ended up throwing them away a long time ago after installing the new ones so there's no turning back to the old ones. I haven't had any issues or misfires on the odd numbered banks since. ;)
