Stereo install project - 2 single DIN units
too much information..........rambling on.........
This week i embarked on part one of my stereo upgrade project for
a 2005 tacoma access cab. It came with the stock single cd stereo.
Price did play a factor in my decisions.
I simply don't have it in me to spend $700
on a head unit and lcd screen for a reliable
brand name unit.
First i must thank this forum and those who posted info
on removing the dashboard 'console' area, information on
the harness to match the stock stereo and other hints.
This infromation was MOST helpful.
I actually found that harness at pep boys.
My plan is to install 2 single DIN units:
a dvd/radio unit and
a seperate lcd/tv unit.
At a later time i'll probably install an amplifier(s) and better speakers.
I have a reliable 4 channel soundstream amp that i removed
from my old 91' toyota pickup before i traded it in.
Anyway, for the reasons below, i choose a jvc single DIN dvd player
model kd-adv6160. It took me a while to do the research on a
unit that had all the features i wanted.
Unfortunetly i couldn't find it any place around here that had it
and inet stores wanted a left arm for it so i got it from ebay
for around $145.
It can play wma/mp3's stored on a DVD, video type dvd's,
vcd, dvd+-r/rw's, double layer dvd's,
pair of auxilary audio inputs,
video output, removable faceplate,
2 pair of preamp outs,
4 pair of speakers output
digital audio out
plus a load of other stuff i didn't plan on using.
Although this unit displays into on the built in display,
it uses the video output to diaply even more details
(ie. mp3 tags, disc names, artist info etc etc).
For the lcd screen i bought some cheap unit off of ebay for
roughly $120. It is a single DIN unit with these features:
7 inch motorized lcd screen,
built in tv tuner
a bunch of audio outputs for the tv tuner part
and some other stuff.
I don't plan on using the TV part, but i can always
add some kind of antennea or whatever later.
Anyway, i bought the cheap black console replacement kit
last fall via ebay. I may upgrade to the
scosche kit that matches the original console later.
I'm not really that picky about it.
The biggest hassle of the whole project was attaching
the 2 single DIN units correctly into this cheapie kit.
But i got it done after making some screws,
filing some plastic and a few other bit.
I'm guessing i spent maybe $340 total for everything.
with any luck i can get some pics.
