How to reset airbag light

I think I have an airbag light come on. Its a light that looks like someone sitting down with a round ball in their lap in the tachometer. I think it went on after I honked the horn this morning. Could be coincedence. If it comes back on I know I have a problem. How do I reset it? I have way too many miles for warranty service. Thanks

i wouldn't mess around with the air bag system, if it's on thqt means there is a problem. i would get it checked out.

Without the proper scan tool you can't reset it.

The code is still stored in history and there is still a problem. I would have it checked out. Like others have said its a problem you want checked out, don't ignore it. Also it came on for a reason so to say theres no problem is a lie.

You cannot reset an airbag light without fixing the problem. The system is made to report a problem the second it sees a problem. The only way to fix it would be to take it somewhere and have it diagnosed and the part that has gone bad, fixed. If it happened when you honked the horn, then it could be the spiral cable, and the steering angle sensor. or it could be something totally unrelated. Could be anything from a airbag ecu to a yaw rate sensor. simply "clearing the code" wont make it go away unless the problem somehow fixed itself. Which....i have seen happen without explaination. i know this happened with you...but i posting this as general info.

Read below.

DTC Normal Source Voltage Drop
(no code is output, but the SRS light will stay ON)

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The SRS is equipped with a voltage–increase circuit (DC–DC converter) in the airbag sensor assembly in case the source voltage drops. When the battery voltage drops, the voltage–increase circuit (DC–DC converter) functions to increase the voltage of the SRS to normal voltage. The diagnosis system malfunction display for this circuit is different from other circuits that is when the SRS warning light remains lit up and the DTC is a normal code, source voltage drop is indicated. Malfunction in this circuit is not recorded in the airbag sensor assembly, and when the source voltage returns to normal, the SRS warning light automatically goes off.

There is no other malfunction that would clear itself.

I'm trying to find this port on a 01 highlander V6 4wd. It is not above the rear timing belt cover on the air intake where I've seen it on other Toyotas. Any idea where I could find it?

OBDI ports are always on the lower left under the dash, near the steering column. I never heard of them being in the engine compartment.

I'm trying to rest the air bag system for my 2005 Corolla. You mentioned "connect a service wire to terminals AB and TC in the 'DIAGNOSTIC' port on the engine harness. You know, the one we used to use for OBDI." I'm trying to locate this port under the hood without success. Can you point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Then you said "It's still the same for OBDII when the scan tool fails." Did you mean you can use the same procedure with cars with an OBDII port? I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix. Also, what is a "service wire?" Is it just a wire with insulation removed on both ends? Thanks.

Yep, a service wire would be a jumper wire. I had to that once on a '95 Previa we owned. I had removed the steering wheel while working on a no low-beam headlights problem, and had turned on the ignition to check something, while the airbag was not installed. That caused the SRS ECU (the airbag computer) to turn the light on.

It took me a few tries with the jumper wire, but I finally did get the light to go off. My guess is the original poster (he's still active here, I believe) had either a charging system problem causing a voltage drop, or a flaky spiral cable (clockspring).

By the way, ALWAYS disconnect the battery, and then wait a couple of minutes for stored charges to bleed off, before doing ANY work on the SRS components (airbags, sensors, ECU, etc.)
