05 - 06 Airbox MOD

Disclaimer:

There has been no evidence, (dyno), yet that this mod will provide any gain in performance. Testing has yet to be done.

This mod was based on the deckplate mod used on the 95-04 Tacos, which offered a good performance increase. (search "deckplate mod")

The airbox shown was purchased from eBay from some poor fool who spent his hard earned cash on a K&N kit.

That being said, I have tried a couple different configs and mods with the 05 airbox lid and have determined this one to be the one with the most "practical" potential.

The rubber plugs you see are the ones used in the bed of an 01 - 04 taco for the drain holes, (Toyota part # 90950-01570), and will run you about $17 for the pair from the dealer.

You could probably use three if you wanted to, but I felt that two was more than enough airspace.

The outer lip of the plug is 62mm across with a 6mm lip. This means all you have to do is drill a perfect 50mm hole for each plug.

The plugs are installed on the lid side so that you can still use any drop in filter available without sacrificing function. When installed properly, the plugs provide a firm water and weatherproof seal so that the airbox functions just like stock. (good for wet drives, dusty roads, and forging) Unlike the deckplate mod, these plugs are soft rubber, fit in your pocket, and wont rattle around in your console like the old deckplate mod that used a hard plastic cap.

-enjoy

Thats a pretty good idea....using the drain plugs. I have an 04 Tacoma in which I modified the air box via the deck plate mod and no matter where I put the plug in the truck it does rattle around

Anyways I also picked up a spare airbox on EBay for 20$!!! by some dumbass who bought the FIPK. I've been thinking about modifying that one also without a 4 inch plug maybe I'll try the drain plugs. Thanks.

You know I can't answer that without getting flamed in here.

I have no dyno results to prove anything, and others claim that removing the entire intake system and running with no filters or plumbing at all gives no HP gain.

I will say that unscientifically, be it the cool sound, or what, the truck seems to have better midrange at WOT.....

I did it because I could, and because I was bored. The rubber grommets are way nicer than the deckplate though IMHO.......

Seat of the pants dyno says ....

The other good thing about the plugs is that you can have as many, or as few in at a time as you want.

Remember... 50mm exactly....or else.

guys, spell this out for me as I'm not following at all what you're doing here. Are you just putting holes in your airbox to suck in more air? clueless like I said.

Yes... But doing so in such a way that the holes can be sealed when needed.

wouldn't that cause less cooler air from the right fender area to enter, and more hot air from the engine bay? or does it have the opposite effect, and creat a vaccum or something to suck more air in from the fender area?

read up on the deckplate mod.

Yes, it is possible that you may be pulling in more hot air than if from the fender, but idea in this case is pulling in MORE air regardless.

Thanks man.

No problem.

That's really not a writeup like I would have done (ie; no pics etc, but it seemed way too simple to need any.

Anyway, I pulled the plugs out before I left work, and did some "spirited" driving on the way home.. It seemed like a noticable improvement.

Combined with the removal of the second air filter I think it's a good mod..

Now if there was just a chassis dyno within 250 miles of my house.... Unfortunately, the guy in town just sold his.....

I humbly apologize for my conduct earlier in my membership.

Just took me a little while to get the "climate" in here.

I'm like Ghandi now.

Thanks for the mod idea. I'm just trying to find some similar plugs without going to the stealership.
