Oil change question

I have 550 miles as of today. I wanted to change my oil at 1000 miles but am going on a road trip this week and will put on about 700 more miles. So should I change it now before my trip at 550 miles or when I get back at 1250 miles? I would think it would be better to do it now before I leave but am not sure.

Since I promote following the mfr's recommended svc intervals, you may not really want my thoughts, but here they are- Since the 1000 mi interval is really arbitrary, there's not much to go wrong with waiting till you return. 1300 mi is still well early in comparison to the mfr's recommendation.

The thought of changing my oil after the first 1000 miles had never really occurred to me until I started to read this forum. Some people seem to feel very strongly about it one way or the other. I just wanted some thoughts from others who do the 1000 mile oil change. Like I said I have never done a 1000 mile oil change before, hell I have never bought a new car before they have always been used.

Just wait till you get back it will be fine! Normally people do the first oil change early just to get the metal from break in out of the oil system. It's a good idea but not 100% nessicary. Also if you are thinking of running Synthetic normally it's not recommended to switch to Synthetic till about 2500 to 5000 miles so just stick with regular Dino (Organic) Oil for the first oil change and then if you are going to switch do so during your second change at 5000 miles or so. This is just what I've learned from reading around this forum and others. Try searching you will find a ton more info about this by using the Search Function on the top of the page.

What size tubing fits the nipple on the oil filter mount?

Dont worry about using tubing. Just hold a can or somthing under the nipple until it is drained. It only takes a second to drain the filter.

Edit: However if you feel you need to do it, just take of the cover that is already on the nipple and match it to some tubing at autozone or lowes or somewhere.

+1
I did mine @ 2500 miles with regular dino oil. I wanted to give my motor a chance to break in before switching. Then @ 5000k I went with mobil1 syn. I wanted to get out all the shavings and the oil looked dirty. There is a ton of info out there... and I understand the question. I would wait until after the trip... run at different rpms during the trip to set the rings. If it is an auto and you are on the highway, drive in OD for a while then drop down into 4th gear... will suck with mpg, but help with speeding up break in.
Good luck and have a safe trip!
