The cruise control on my truck is very “unstable”. It has difficulty maintaining a constant set speed. For instance, if I have it set at 55 mph and start to go down a slight downgrade the cruise logically opts to let off the accelerator. If at the end of the downgrade the road starts to climb the truck may slow down to 52 mph before the cruise sends the signal to speed up. Now the transmission downshifts and the engine races to try to bring her back up to 55. Inevitably it bypasses 55 and has to slow again before hitting and maintaining 55 mph. When I’m traveling at a set speed and I bump up the cruise button 1 or 2 clicks to increase cruise speed by 1 or 2 mph it takes at least 2 seconds for it to react. This I believe is causing the constant coasting and racing while on the highway; it just doesn’t react quickly enough to changing road grades to maintain a constant speed within 1-2 mph. My old Tacoma was and our Highlander is able to maintain accurate and constant speed with the cruise on.
I doubt it, but is there any kind of adjustment for this inadequacy?
john, I think what you are experiencing is not uncommon. we have the ability to see ahead and mentally prepare for the up or downhill. unfortunately the cruise control is only able to react to the speed and engine load.
don't think your cruise is bad, it's just a crappy system that works best on long, flat roads (ie., south Texas).
my $.02

The c.c. sucks unless youre on a really long flat road. Just one of those things youre going to have to deal with because I dont think Toyotas going to do anything about it.

The cruise control is the only thing I don't like about my truck. Like you said, it takes to long to respond and then over compensates. I live in Florida which is flat as hell, and on the little overpass bridges it will still downshift. sometimes into 3rd. It is the worst CC I've ever had. I usually end up bypassing it by pressing the accelerator down as the load increases. It doesn't downshift then, but it defeats the perpose of the CC.

My sentiments, exactly.
My GMC would hold constant speed no matter what. But, I guess shitty cruise is a small price to pay for all of the positive things about the truck.

I dont cut the cruise control on if Im on a road with even very small hills. Its embarrasing for someone to be riding with you and you hit a small hill and the truck downshifts two gears and revs to the moon just to get over a very light incline. Im glad I love almost everything else about the truck because the cruise control is the worst Ive seen in any vehicle.

Mine does the same shit and I have to drive it from Vegas to LA this weekend. This is going to be a shitty trip, because this truck sucks on the open road and CC sucks too. I miss my S4. Oh well at least the reason I am going to LA is to drop it off at Camburg finally after waiting for 2 months.
