DVD/Nav units have a lot of features and a lot of wiring. This can mean a lot of adapter harnesses that have to be sqeezed behind the radio. It makes it so much cleaner and easier when you can just plug everything right in. Plus the Eclipse HUs don't have an outboard "brain" that you have to mount under the seat. It's all built in to the main unit.
As I mentioned before, I really wanted the Eclipse unit but I didn't have the cash for it so I decided that I would just buy the kenwood dvd unit and wait to buy the navigation accessory. The Scosche wiring harness that Walmart sells is really not a big fuss IMO. Its color coded plug and play and very easy to work with. But yeah, the Eclipse unit enables steering wheel controls (doesn't matter for me) and puts everything in one unit. Extremely easy and straight forward. I still like the Eclipse unit better (and now its cheaper on ebay ) but the Kenwood combo does have some advantages. The navigation add-on does not rely on DVD navigation. It has a hard drive and uses an SD card slot for map updates so no more need to buy new nav DVDs. I'm not sure if the Eclipse unit tilts like the Kenwood does. This feature does come in handy when the sun is hitting the screen or you want to look at another angle or change the look of the unit in the dash. And the DVD output is great with its slightly larger screen.

The only issues that I have with the DVD unit is that the backgrounds suck and I am dying to find a way to customize them somehow. lol. Most of the time I just keep the background black. The user interface also takes a little time adjusting to with most of the functionality being touchscreen.

BTW guys, sorry for the long posts.

Bump!

I'm installing my Eclipse AVN 5500 right now and can't seem to get the outter trim pieces to fit it. I'm using the factory bracket instead of the one Scosche supplied.

Use all the Scosche parts and it will fit properly. I added a little hot glue to the back of the trim ring and where the Scosche brackets attatch to the main peice. It's pretty solid.

It also looks like there's a gap between the dash kit and your dash, on the sides. Keep the wires neat and tucked down in that open cavity below the radio. This will make more room and let the radio and dash kit fit tighter against the stock dash pieces.

Okay guys heres the HUGE questions i went to circuit city and i was so close to getting my new navi. But i ran into a pickle. I fell in love with the Pioneer Z1 but the dude at circuit city said it was a waste of money he recommend the eclipse AVN5500. Both were not in stock they had to order them but they had the dash kit in. So heres my question which one to go with i researched both they are very simialr. The pioneer has the 30g HD and bluetooth i think thats were the extra 300 bucks come in. But any who since you guys already have some eclipse and i believe one person has the Z1 which is the better product i like the fact that eclipse has that sweet safety feature, but again both look really good. I doubt ill use the bluetooth, and the 30gig Hd probably wont use it ill just use my ipod.

So which one should i go with? I like the price the guy at circuit city gave me for the eclipse. His going to knock off 150 of the price and 200 off the install. For either system.

PB hopefully you can give me some input since u have an Eclipse.

I would go with the eclipse and do the install yourself. It's very straightforward and you only have to splice three wires because eclipse uses all of the same factory connections as Toyota. You also won't lose your steering wheel controls if you have them. The safety feature on the Z1 I don't think you can bypass, so that means no watching DVD's while the car is in motion. On the eclipse you can just simply ground the parking break wire and you can use the DVD player anytime. Hope that helps.

All the eclipse maps SUCK! The quality, clearity and the fetures suck even with the new maps out. Friend has a 5500 and the map and graphics makes the screen look crapy. Eclipse has a good name but i dont see the navigation in the elcipse anywhere close to other unit out. IMO the only thing going for the eclipse is the plug and play. But with adaptors out now i dont know.
