Well, my 2006 Tacoma has a whole 2400 miles on it and the windshield developed a crack this afternoon as I drove home. The crack is just a bit to the left of the center and extends vertically from the bottom of the glass for 3 or 4 inches into the field of view.
I immediately took the truck to the Toyota dealer and the service manager looked carefully and found a microscopic ding that he claims caused the glass to crack. There is a small ding but it is really small! He also suggested that the warmer weather would contribute to the problem. He says I should talk to my insurance agent about replacement.
Has anyone else had a windshield crack in a '05 or '06 Taco? My 1989 Toyota had several large dings that never progressed into cracks so I never had to replace the windshield. This one is already 6 inches or so long so I assume it will progress. I plan to drive from the Bay Area to the LA area next week so I won't have time to before then.

Many times a ding, or small chip in the windshield, will turn into a crack due to a signifant change in temperatures. When you get a chip, it's pretty important to either fill the chip yourself, with Permatex, or have an auto glass place do it, before it turns into a crack.

i had the same exact problem as you. except when mine got to be a few inches tall, it tee'd off in both directions. I even drove mine to L.A. with the crack in it, which i would recommend doing because if you get another crack in it going down 5, you gotta get another new windshield.
I agree 100%- Permatex that chip/crack ASAP after the incident.
This is important with the rock dings in the glass to prevent them from growing/ spreading. I've used the Permatex product 3x (only once on my '05- so far) and it has always kept the damage from growing/spreading. The key is to do it right away. The rock chip I got on my Taco happened on the way home from work, so I detoured to Kragen, picked up the Permatex kit, and fixed it as soon as I got home. The more you wait, the more time you allow moisture to enter the crack and expand the glass with the temperature changes.

I agree with the others. Glass is a brittle material, the visible size of the ding doesn't necessarily indicated whether it cracks, it's got more to do with the stresses in the glass prior to the strike, and the energy imparted by the strike. The shape and trajectory of the stone will greatly affect the size and shape of the chip crater, and while the "notch" created by a bad ding may have a role, the energy absorbed by the full thickness of the outer laminate (layer) will have the greatest role in whether it cracks on impact. (Actually, a smooth round crater is less likely to initiate a crack than a jagged one, but that gets into fracture mechanics that few of us are boring enough to want to read.) While improperly mounted glass could be more susceptible to cracking, you would have a difficult time proving that as it is more likely that the stone strike is the cause, and is considered a road hazard.
So, get a chip repair asap, and cross your fingers. (They don't always work, but I've only had two failures out of a dozen or so repairs on our vehicles over the years. One was recent, the other when the stuff first came out in the 1980s.)

The ding was micoscopic in size. It could barely be seen even after the crack developed and only if you viewed it from an angle with light at just the correct angle. There was nothing to repair. In my '89 Toyota, the chips were sizeable and I had one of them filled with some sort of epoxy but of course the crack reappeared a few weeks later. No long cracks developed from either of those chips.

Of course it doesn't help matters that you have to cut someone off or get in an accident on your driver's test, otherwise you don't pass. And you're exempt from taking the test if you're missing any one of your senses, including common.

I had the same problem, in the same location, as you and got the same answer from the dealer.
I had mine drilled for $35.00.
If it doesn't work, I will have my insurance company give me a new windshield.

The reason your 89' lasted was because windshields were built stronger back then, now with the new regulations and law, windshields have to be thinner so when you get into an accident, your head might be able to withstand the impact of the windshield, raising survival rate.
You may as well get used to it. The glass in these windshields must be incredibly thin, I have had three crack since last July.
Same here. Replaced one in my Tacoma at 500 miles and another one in my girlfriends celica just last week. Glass Companies are very price competitive so definitely shop around if you have to replace it.
I got hit by a small pebble and it cracked just 3 weeks after i had it. Replaced it and 2 wesks later again. S now i have replaced it twice less than a year and ever since i got the bug deflector i have not had a problem (as of yet, thank god).
Oh and when i replaced the windshield it took care of my whistling problem i had. Guess the orignal and second had a leak. But the third one was a charm.
