Anyone running aftermarket bulbs with stock DRL's?
I'm looking into updating my OEM bulbs for the front turn signal/DRL socket. I know that many have gone this route to get the "clear look", and put in an aftermarket 3157 bulb. But in none of the posts is there any mention of impact if you have the DRL's. My questions:
- The front turn signal bulb is listed as a 4157 rather than 3157. I don't really know the difference between the two (does anyone?), but one of my guesses is that this is an "upgraded" bulb to handle the constant power draw for the DRL's. Can anyone confirm?
- Has anyone put in an aftermarket 3157 bulb (either LED, chromed, or any white bulb like the PIAA Xtreme white) with the DRL's.
- For those that have gone LED - does it change the frequency of blinking? I've read in some places that you can see faster blinking because of the low wattage draw.
I was just checking out the Sylvania site, and it looks like they make a 4157 AST that's a dual filament bulb for running a low watt feed for the DRL's, and a higher watt feed for the signals. With their Silverstar line, they've got some with the irridescent coating that give off a silvery blue hue when off.
I plan on replacing all bulbs in my taco when it arrives. I like the white xenon bulbs much more than factory. What ones are needed for the taco? I am just doing bulbs and not housing/casing.
tks

I just put in the Sylvania 4157's after the headlight mod. The look blue off and amber burning. I have no idea about the DRL as I do not have them. This picture doesn't really show too godd, but in the sun the turn signal seem the same color as the truck.....I planned it that way.

Interesting....I still see some amber hues in that photo. Maybe it's just the angle or the reflector?
Most 9005 bulbs are rated at 65 watts, whereas the stock fogs are a 45watt bulb. I wonder if anyone's had problems with the extra heat in the fog light housing? 9145's are hard to find though.
9006's are typically a 55w bulb, but I don't know if it would fit Ok. I might start another thread and/or check around on this.
Don't worry, everyone is running the 9005s in the fog location and no one has had any issues yet.
It is only an increase of 20w, it really isn't much and besides you really have no choice since 9145 bulbs are hard to find!
For the headlights, go with H4s and find bulbs that match the 60/55w stock wattage.
I had 100/90w Nokya bulbs and they were not as bright as the Luminics that were running at 60/55w. Wattage does not have anything to do with brightness. Brightness is measured in Lumens.

I hear ya. But some bulb makers try to compensate for loss of brightness (due to the film they put on the bulb to achieve a certain color) by increasing the wattage to get their lumens back up. On the Acura forms, some guys tried to run 70 or 80 watt bulbs in their fog housing, and the plastic cover melted..... Gotta be careful down there, because you will get more heat generated from the higher wattage.
I put Luminics JDM yellows in the fogs on my wife's Acura - they are very nice. Great output, and definitely a great price.

Most definately man!
We should be fine with the extra 20w down in the fog location!
BTW: I have the Luminics Pure Blue H4 bulbs for my headlights. The bulbs themselves are tinted VERY BLUE. I thought my brightness would be killed. I was completely wrong. They are actually brighter than stock and put out the bluest light I have ever seen! They are 60/55w too! Unfortunately, they don't post how many Lumens these bulbs put out.
They are ridiculously blue, but not ricey. They are very, very Xenon/HID like.
I was emailing a guy at Luminics today, and he says they carry the H10's in both hyper white and jdm yellow (although I didn't see H10's on the website). Good option for the fogs for those folks that would feel safer going with the OEM wattage (I do).
I went head and bought some MTECs today before I heard back from Luminics, so I'm going to give them a try. I've seen mixed reviews on the MTECs, but mostly good. $50 for a pair of super white H4's and a pair of ion yellow H10s shipped.

^ Could ya please post some pics of your lights when ya get a chance? Thanks!
